October 1 is the day of the month when people welcome the season of fall. The anticipation of fall has been on people's minds for those who are not fans of the weather summer brings. With fall in full swing, these holidays that take place in October welcome the season. Here are 8 of these holidays:

Oct 1: Breast Cancer Awareness Month Kicks Off

October 1 kicks off the annual month dedicated to helping combat breast cancer. This annual campaign goal is to increase awareness of the disease. Many organizations create events with the profits going towards the research for breast cancer.

Oct. 3 "Mean Girls" Day

"On Oct. 3, he asked me what day it was." If you know about this quote, you are a "Mean Girls" fan. This unofficial holiday is in the books for the film "Mean Girls" that came out 2004. A classic, and still a hit-- fans will be watching this movie nonstop on this day.

Oct. 5 World Teachers Day

Teachers deserve a little recognition, and some thanks and appreciation. This national holiday helps recognize and praise the role teachers have in the education field.

Oct. 6: Oktoberfest

Traveling all the way to Munich, Bavaria, Germany, Oktoberfest celebrates the start of the Fall season. While it is a giant world festival in Germany, Oktoberfest celebrations are held around the world during this time.

Oct. 8: Yom Kippur Day

"Yom Kippur" means "Day of Atonement". People set aside this day to atone for sins they have committed. It is a day of prayer, fasting, and a time to attend the synagogue.

Oct. 14: Columbus Day/Indigenous Peoples' Day 

Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue in the year 1492. This holiday is considered a controversial holiday since he mistreated the Natives in the New World.

Oct. 30: National Candy Corn Day

Eat a bowl of candy corn, and get prepped for this day. Whether you like candy corn or not, people who have a sweet tooth will enjoy this holiday.

Oct. 31 Halloween

Spend time trick or treating if your child, and if you are a young adult, party safely. This night is the only night of the year where you can dress up to be something or someone else!
