Creative Ways To Spend Valentine's Day Besides The Typical Dinner-Date
We Heart It

It seems as though everyone does the same thing for Valentine’s Day, but some of us just aren't big on the typical dinner-date. Maybe you think it’s too high maintenance, or maybe you just want to try something different. Whatever the reason, there’s still hope for you this year. Here are a few ways to make the most of this beautifully sappy holiday.

Cook your own meal.

Go big or go home, and don't forget dessert. Do everything together, make it a challenge, or turn it into your own indoor picnic! There are so many ways to make this option your own.

Spend the day in the city.

I happen to be in traveling distance of the great cities of Philadelphia and NYC, but any big city works! Whether you take the train down or drive, you're sure to have a great time. If you're anything like me and have gone into the city quite frequently, look into some new places that you've yet to explore.

Go geocaching.

If you have no idea what I'm talking about, this is the one for you. Geocaching is basically the world's largest treasure hunt. All you have to do is download the (free) app or go to the website to see what treasures are nearby. The app has a really helpful GPS locator that will tell you when you get close, as well as give hints along the way. When you find one, you get to take an item and leave one for someone else. I myself have found geocaches in the hole of a tree and even dangling down a well. And who doesn't want to go on a treasure hunt?

Go on an outdoors-y adventure.

Since Valentine's Day is in the winter, think skiing, snow-tubing, hiking, or anything else that won't completely turn you into an icicle.

Explore somewhere that's been abandoned.

OK, this one sounds creepy, but I swear it's not. If you're in the Pennsylvania area, there's this place called Graffiti Highway in Centralia and it is the most interesting place you will ever visit. It is an abandoned section of Route 61 that has been covered in graffiti over the years. Or you could try out Linfield Industrial Park in Limerick, PA, which has been abandoned for 30 years. Be adventurous!

Stay in and play Monopoly.

When you see those little green houses, you know things are about to get real.

Go to a museum.

Even if you don't think museums are your thing, you may just not be trying hard enough. Whether you're into art museums like the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the International Spy Museum in DC, or the crazy City Museum in St. Louis, Missouri, there's one for everyone.

Go ice skating.

Outdoors is preferable because it usually involves a nicer view. Maybe you're awful at ice skating, like my boyfriend and I, but you'll definitely get a laugh out of it.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
