8 Ways To Decorate Your New Apartment And Make It A Home

Looking for some inspiration to liven up your new apartment? Here are a few suggestions to get you thinking:

1. Sage

Using sage to cleanse the energy in a new apartment can help set the mood for your space. It helps eliminate any negative energy left behind, whether it be the previous tenants or even the many other people who've rented the place before you. Using sage right when you move in will help set the tone and make it easier to adjust to a new place and let you create it to be your own.

2. Colorful Rugs

A lot of times when renting an apartment, there are certain rules you have to abide by, such as not painting the walls. In order to bring more color and liveliness into your home, choose a bold colored rug to help liven up an otherwise stale apartment.

3. Roommate Crafts and DIY

Spend a night crafting with your roommates. Look up some cute, doable DIYs on Pinterest and spend a night in bonding and decorating your new home together. This is a fun way that all of you can contribute to decorating one of the common rooms of the house.

4. Reupholstered Furniture

Money can be tight as a college student. A great way to save money on furnishing your apartment is to go to a Goodwill or go street shopping (choosing wisely) for lightly used furniture that you can either paint or reupholster to give it a chic new look. Investing in a staple gun and some spray paint is all you need to turn an old kitchen table and chairs into a boho attention grabber.

5. Fresh Flowers

Flowers help bring color and life into a space. It definitely makes a difference in my mood when I wake up every morning and see a vase of fresh flowers in my room. It is worth the investment at the florist to spoil yourself with flowers every now and then.

6. Scented Candles

Smell can either be a deal breaker or maker when it comes to, well, anything really. If you're in an apartment building where you can smell what all of your neighbors are cooking for dinner, you may want to spring for a few nice scented candles. There's nothing like lighting a candle and having the house smell like fresh baked cookies without risking burning them to a crisp or, in my case, poisoning my friends.

7. Disposable Camera Pictures

Have a house warming party and as party favors hand out disposable cameras at the beginning of the party. Have people take pictures of each other as the night goes on. Afterwards, get the photos developed and be surprised! You can hang them all over your walls or fridge in your new place.

8. Mirrors

Mirrors are a great way to help make a place look bigger and brighter. Expand your tiny college apartment with a few mirrors on the walls and enjoy the view every time you pass by. ;)

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week.
