8 Waterproof Makeup Products Every Wanna-Be Mermaid Needs This Summer

In this day and age, products in the beauty industry often claim to do much more than they actually are able to. Try this face cream and instantly look 10 years younger! This foundation uses specially infused minerals in order to scientifically shrink your pores—you can trust us, it’s science! Check out this mascara, it makes your lashes 400% longer, fuller, and as tall as the Empire State Building! And so on.

One product in particular that many beauty brands have made wild promises about is one that I have been repeatedly disappointed by: waterproof makeup. Now, perhaps the problem is actually with me, and maybe I’m holding “waterproof” to too high of a standard, but waterproof makeup has failed me on many occasions. At worst, it’s been exactly the same as non-waterproof makeup, either coming off completely or turning me into a raccoon at the first sign of moisture. At best, it’s usually still subpar, with an unimpressive amount of flaking and streaking for something that claims to be able to withstand the makeup removing power of H20.

As an avid windsurfer, kite surfer, and overall watersport enthusiast, I have been on the hunt for waterproof makeup that lives up to it’s name since, well, I started wearing makeup. Over the years, and after researching and trying just about every waterproof product on the face of this earth, I’ve managed to find a few Holy Grail ones that have actually honored their waterproof claims.

For this article, I decided put the best of the best through some rigorous, water filled tests, so that you don’t have to. In fact, my daily makeup routine uses mostly waterproof makeup even when I don’t plan on going in the water (partially because I’m paranoid and you never know when you’ll need it, and partially because I’m lazy and it’ll stay on all day no matter what I’m doing). Most of these products are pretty pricey, but if you have your heart set on having the best waterproof makeup out there, then they’re definitely worth it. I’ve tested these products not only through my usual, regular use of them, but also by testing them in pools, at the beach, and in the ocean. In doing further research for this article, I also tested all the products thoroughly in the shower, rubbing my eyes and running the water straight on my face in order to see which ones stayed on the best. So without further ado, here are the best waterproof makeup products, tried and tested, for each category:

DiorShow Iconic Waterproof Mascara

Waterproof Rating: 7/10 (Gym Level)

I have tried countless mascaras from countless brands, and let me tell you, this is the best mascara of all time. You will never find a better mascara, overall quality it is 10/10, and the only reason it’s not a 10/10 on my waterproof rating is because, sadly, it does come off a bit when surfing and swimming (nothing major, but noticeable). But if you’re looking for a waterproof mascara for everyday, this is the jackpot—It makes your lashes look amazing, with just the right amount of volume and length, and no flaking at all throughout the day. Good news is that even though it isn’t for extreme watersports, it’s waterproof enough to wear to the gym without it budging at all. You can even sleep with it on and wake up with your lashes looking just as bomb as when you went to bed. This is the mascara I wear every single day, with the only exception being the days that I am going to be in the water for a while and need mega-powerful waterproof mascara—if that’s what you’re looking for, keep reading.

Lancôme Définicils Waterproof High Definition Mascara

Waterproof Rating: 10/10 (Tsunami Level)

If you sprayed me straight in the face with a fire-truck hose, made me cry watching the beginning of Tarzan 30 times in a row, and then made me swim underwater in the ocean for an hour, this mascara would still look exactly the same as when I put it on—I kid you not. It is that waterproof. Of course, no one product has it all, so I do have to admit that this mascara isn’t quite as amazing as the DiorShow Iconic is overall (in my opinion), but nevertheless it still is very high quality and definitely wins the “Most Waterproof” category. During the shower test, this mascara came out perfect, without a hint of flaking or smudging. Surfers and swimmers who love those long lashes—say goodbye to raccoon eyes and hello to your new favorite product!

Chanel Stylo Yeux Waterproof Long-Lasting Eyeliner

Waterproof Rating: 10/10 (Tsunami Level)

This product is the best of both worlds—it does it all (even though I did say earlier that no product can have it all, I guess this is a rare exception). It is the best overall quality eyeliner I’ve ever used, and it is the most waterproof as well. This is a pencil liner, which I like for the beach because it is a bit more casual looking than a liquid liner (but if you’re looking for a solid waterproof liquid liner don’t worry, I have that listed later too). No smearing, no smudging, and unlimited surfing and swimming.

Make Up For Ever Full Cover Concealer

Waterproof Rating: 10/10 (Tsunami Level)

This may not have “waterproof” in the title, but don’t be fooled—this concealer will stay on through waves and sweat for the entire day. The official description does indeed say that the product is waterproof, stating that it is a “long-lasting, matte finish, oil-free, waterproof, full coverage concealer”—and it lives up to every word.

Mac Cosmetics Pro Longwear Nourishing Waterproof Foundation

Waterproof Rating: 10/10 (Tsunami Level)

Usually on days at the lake, pool, or ocean, I limit my makeup regimen to the basics, mascara, eyeliner, and occasionally concealer, so for a long time I didn’t even know that waterproof foundation existed. That was until I studied abroad in Ireland, where I had to walk everywhere in a virtually daily torrential downpour. Seriously, it’s my favorite place on earth, but in the winter months it does rain practically every day. And not a cute little drizzle either—I’m talking about cats and dogs being rained out of the sky, combined with winds whipping the rain in your face and going so fast that it’s impossible to use an umbrella. This, my friends, is when I learned the wonders of waterproof foundation. Because although I don’t personally like to wear a full face of makeup to go kitesurfing or swimming, I do like to at least try to look cute for school and going out. So when I tell you that this foundation can survive the Irish weather, you can trust that it will almost definitely survive the pool as well.

stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner

Waterproof Rating: 8/10 (Quick-Dip Level)

Though this eyeliner will probably come off a little bit if you try to go surfing in it, it’s the most waterproof liquid eyeliner I’ve been able to find. Liquid liner isn’t exactly meant for swimming in, so I think this is about as waterproof as it’ll ever get, but it’s staying power is still quite impressive. Even if it comes off, it doesn’t run or smear at all, so there’s no risk of raccoon eyes. It’ll definitely stay put all day and night, and you don’t have to worry about a thing at the gym. Honestly, you can even get away with a quick dip in the pool; you just might not be able to actually swim around if you want that winged eyeliner to stay fully intact.

Make Up For Ever Aqua Seal

Waterproof Rating: 9/10 (Swim-Proof Level)

So, I’ve actually never put this product to the test with watersports myself, so I can’t promise it’ll hold up during a 4 hour surf session (thus the 9/10 instead of 10/10), but it definitely is a possibility based on how well it held up during the shower test. Aqua Seal ensured that my eye shadow not only stayed on, but also that it didn’t smear or move at all. Comparatively, the eye shadow that I applied without Aqua Seal came off almost immediately under the stream of water.

BareMinerals Locked & Coated Waterproof Lash Topcoat

Waterproof Rating: 8/10 (Quick-Dip Level)

If you’re looking for something to make your current mascara a bit more durable in water, this will definitely do the trick. I’ve used this before over my usual mascara (DiorShow Iconic Waterproof) at the pool when I just went in for a quick swim and it worked great, however it won’t hold up as well as the Lancôme Définicils Waterproof mascara, as your mascara will still come off a bit using this if you’re going to be swimming or submerged for a while. In the shower test, I applied my usual mascara on one eye with this topcoat, and on the other without it, and the eye that had Locked & Coated on lasted longer than the other against the water.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week.
