Before going to college as a freshman, our expectations for the year are often extremely unrealistic. Frolicking through the year without a care in the world, we all say we won't procrastinate, will end the year with a 4.0 GPA, maintain an acceptable social life and debunk the freshman 15 myth. Freshman year hardly ends up being any of these things. Procrastination is a contagious disease, a 4.0 is next-to-impossible to reach, social lives suffer when Netflix adds a new season of OITNB, and the Freshman 15 is always ready to pounce. With such a failure in expectations, you would think we'd enter the summer with wisdom. However, we all have the same eight unrealistic expectations for our first summer after college.
1. You're going to make bank with your summer job.
Sure you're going to make a lot of money, but that Chipotle burrito is at least eight bucks, and how can you say no to any kind of food?
2. You're going to get fit before going back to school.
Let's be honest, after a full day of getting rich from your summer job, it's hard to motivate yourself to work out. Besides, that burrito is still calling your name.
3. You will get to do whatever you want.
It's a hard transition between doing whatever you want whenever you want to living with your parents. Odds are, you've heard the "if you're going to live under my roof, you're going to follow my rules" spiel from your parents.
4. Your parents will start to give you money again.
This one was really more of a hope than an expectation, but it's a tough reality to accept. We aren't in high school anymore friends.
5. You will get to have a relaxing summer in the sun.
Summer isn't about relaxing and having fun anymore. If you're not working, you're probably completing your mom's chore list.
6. You will hang with the high school besties daily.
In college you lose touch with friends during the year, but expect to spend every waking moment with them like you used to. Hate to break it to you, but you probably went separate ways for a reason.
7. Summer school will be easy.
LOL. You will have tests and labs just like you did during the year. Yes, you probably feel productive during the day, but odds are you weren't expecting such a time commitment.
8. You won't have to have the rest of your life plan figured out and ready to present.
You will constantly be questioned about what you are doing to figure out your future. What grad schools are you looking at? What summer classes are you taking? The list goes on and on.
