8 Tips On How To Do Well This Semester

Finding a good successful way to study has not been easy. After spending a few months in college, I quickly learned what works best for me. These are just a few tips that truly help me to do my best, and I hope some of them work for you too!

1. Read the pre-lecture slides

It always help to know what will be covered in class before hand. This way, whether you're skimming the pre-slides or thoroughly reading them, you'll have an idea of what you need to focus on.

2. Take hand written notes in class

Always handwrite your notes! It has been proven statistically that physically writing down notes helps you remember what you learned. That of course is compared to typing your notes or just following along online.

3. Ask questions

If you don't know a concept, ask questions. Whether it be in class or in the professor's office hours, always ask! Chances are you're not alone.

4. Take 10 minutes to go over your notes after class.

By taking a minimum of ten minutes to read over the notes you've taken, it will significantly help that information stay in your memory. If you read them for even longer or even more frequently, the chances of you retaining all of the information dramatically increases.

5. Read the chapter summaries in the text book.

After you've finished the chapter in class, read the summaries! If you can understand everything said in the summaries, chances are you're in great shape. But the summaries also tell you where you're fuzzy on information, and which sections you may need to go back and read.

6. Highlight your notes in different colors

By color-coating your notes, you are more likely to remember what you wrote or read. It also helps you to organize your notes as well. After all, organization is one of the main keys to being successful.

7. Make flash cards

Even if it's just vocabulary words, knowing what you're reading is half the battle. If you don't know what words you're reading, then how are you supposed to understand the chapter -- let alone do well on the exam?

8. Don't forget to take a break for yourself

If you're one of those people who live in their books, do not forget to take time for yourself. You don't want to burn yourself out. This is especially important during more stressful times like midterms or finals week.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
