8 Tips That Fight Back Homesickness

Leaving home for college might be hard for many people. Saying goodbye to their loved ones and moving in to an entirely new place. Yet, friendship does not end there. Here are some great tips on how to keep the flame on!

1. Decorate your dorm with pictures.

Photography captures the best memories and keeps it for long. While missing your family and old friends, you have a lot of snapshots that recall the vivid memories and give you the feeling of home. What is better than seeing your friends every morning and night?

2. Schedule to call home.

While you may have missed a lot of late night talks, thanks to the technology, you can still catch up through Skype, Hangout, Facetime, or Duo, or more. A short call once in a while and a long video chat are key. Having a good conversation with people you've known is the best.

3. Write letters.

Writing is the most powerful and lasting expression. Write down what you are thinking, missing, and enjoying. While email is timely and convenient, handwritten letters and postcards are also worth sending every once a while! (A little surprise creates an amazing impact.)

4. Mail packages.

Order your college shirts and send your school spirit back home. I am always excited to receive packages even though I know what is in it (Amazon etc). Never fail to surprise people with a great gift :)

5. Count down.

Count down the date you are coming home, and do it on a larger scale. For instance, 1 semester is around 17 weeks; another way of viewing things makes things much easier.

6. Keep yourself busy.

College has a lot to offer and you can definitely have a tight schedule. While you are busy adjusting to the new life, you can kind of "forget" the feeling of missing home and friends. Anyhow, you had better blend this with another method that endures.

7. Keep a journal.

You want to leave some time to digest the new things in life and be utterly honest. This is especially helpful when you can't find someone to talk to.

8. Have a comfy bed.

A good night sleep heals everything. Obviously.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
