Traveling is a common pastime once summer hits, whether you're flying, driving, or cruising. All three methods include a lot of planning and packing — but driving is another whole story. When telling a friend you're driving to another state or, in some cases even another country, jaws usually drop and you're met with a face of shock. But, don't be afraid to travel via road! Here are a few tips to help make your trip much more smooth, and even more fun!
1. Bring a GPS
You can't always rely on your phone to lead the way, sometimes things happen, so make sure to bring another device to lead the way! Yet, we can't always trust technology either, so keep a map at hand just in case.
2. Wear comfortable clothes
Traveling via car can be so comfortable if you're in the right position with the right clothes on. Make sure to bring light layers to wear and a pair of easily accessible shoes, flip flops and sandals work best because you can also take them off to put your feet up on the seat (it's gross, but really comfortable).
3. Travel with a friend
Driving for a long period of time is risky, so make sure to travel with a friend! Plus, everything is better when you're with someone.
4. Stop periodically
It's never a good idea to drive a nine hour or more trip nonstop. Make sure to stop periodically, whether at a hotel overnight or at a Dunkin Donuts for ten minutes.
5. Bring food!
This one is so important. Pack a ton of snacks! Don't just pack coffee or energy boosters, it's suggested to pack sweet as well as salty things to fulfill all of your cravings. It's also smart to bring a cooler with drinks and water, you can stop at gas stations to refill ice if necessary. It's much easier to pack compact things like sandwiches or packets of cookies, chips, etc.
6. Entertainment
No one likes a boring car ride, no matter how long or short, so bring forms of entertainment! Whether it be music, a tablet, gaming system, book, etc.
7. First Aid
Always pack a compact container filled with first aid related items bandages, gauze and cream. It's also a smart idea to bring medications that may be necessary if someone gets carsick, like Pepto Bismol or even Aleve.
8. SMILE!
Yes, road trips are a lot of work, but they can also be a lot of fun! In order to make the best experience for your trip, remember to smile and think positive! I promise it'll be worth it.
