Fall semester is upon us, and with that horrifying reality flying our way it is important to keep some things in mind about going in to a new year. If you are anything like me, it's time to get at least a semblance of your life together so Fall semester isn't a total shit show. Here are so tips for taking on a new academic year like a champ!
1. Organization
I use my planner religiously. Back in middle school and even high school I scoffed at planners, but now with work, school, meetings, due dates, and exam dates there are simply too many things that need to be written down. One of my favorite professors always says "What's the one biggest lie we tell ourselves? That we'll remember it later." The truth hurts, folks.
2. Finding a routine
It's surprising how much stress can be relieved by something as simple as sticking to a routine. Having your day set out keeps you on task better, there are no surprises, and you don't have to worry about leaving anything last minute. The simplicity of a routine can be one of your biggest assets to avoid burning out too early in the semester and year.
3. Time-outs
It's important to give yourself downtime between the endless hours of studying, working, and running around getting things done. Allow some time for yourself every week when you don't have to be doing anything specific. Take a walk or read something for fun instead of reading a textbook; take up a hobby like yoga, or go to the gym.
4. Extracurricular activities
Along with all of the homework, exams, and midterm dates to worry about it's important to have fun things outside of college and work to look forward to. Plan a weekend getaway, or go to a concert or festival of some kind. Whatever interests you, make it happen, and get those dates in your planner so you've got things other than finals to be excited about!
5. Study breaks
It's very important to take frequent breaks when studying to increase information retention and help with fatigue. Remember to get up, walk around, listen to some music, anything that helps keep you sharp to get the most out of your study sessions.
6. Snacks
Always, always, always keep a water bottle with you, and keep some healthy snacks on hand. I always have snacks in both my backpack and purse, along with a water bottle, and once winter hits, I always have a thermal cup with extra tea bags. These little things will keep you going strong all day when you don't have any real breaks for meals.
7. Keep in touch
Make sure to make time for those people in your life that aren't always near. Whether it's your parents, siblings, friends studying in different towns or states, or significant others, take time out of your busy week and catch up over dinner or coffee, Skype, a quick call; the people you thought of while reading this are obviously important. Let them know it, too.
8. Goals
It's hard to keep motivated all through the year. Drop-out contemplation becomes a very real thing more often than not, but remember that the stress, the agonizing, and the all-nighters are temporary. Don't lose sight of the goals you set for yourself going in to college. You're here for a reason, and this is your shot to make it all happen. Don't take it for granted, and push yourself to the finish because this is all leading up to what you want for your future.
