8 Tips for Losing That Winter Blubber

If any season makes us more prone to gaining fat, it is definitely winter. The cold weather often makes us stay locked up inside, which only marks the beginning of our problems. Let's be honest, how many of us really enjoy the freezing weather outside? The snow might look nice, but it definitely gets old quickly. It seems like even in endless layers of clothing, the cold weather still finds a way to affect us.

Winter seems like the perfect season for many of us to stress eat, too. This is possibly because of the stress of the holiday season. Not only are many of us present shopping, but it is also the prime time for engagements and weddings. With all of this stress, extra weight comes easily. Your eating habits definitely aren't the only suspects to blame.

Even though it is easy to hide under oversized sweaters during the winter, those long sleeves won't be very comfortable in the summer. Many people become victims to severe diets and other unhealthy habits in an attempt to redeem themselves. If that winter weight is taken a toll on you, here are eight tips on how to lose it the right way.

1. Incorporate more hot beverages into your diet.

Since it is already cold outside, it is the perfect season to load up on hot drinks such as tea and coffee. Forget that hot cocoa. It is calorie laden and full of sugar that will not aid you in your weight loss efforts. Instead, replace sugary beverages with more natural alternatives. One popular drink for weight loss is matcha tea. It is a powder form of green tea that was cherished by monks for its health benefits. Not only is it great for boosting your metabolism, but it is also full of other healthy things such as antioxidants. Another great tip for weight loss is boosting your caffeine consumption. The best drink for this is coffee, as many of you know. Combining coffee and different teas such as matcha will definitely aid your efforts.

2. Get out of the house.

Winter makes it easy for anyone to stay locked up inside, away from the harsh outside elements. Although this approach might seem optimal, it will harm you in the long run. Laying around all day does not burn calories. Go visit with friends or just go out in public. Walking around anywhere is better than sitting inside all day. Plus, socialization is essential for you mental health, as well.

3. Join a gym or a health club.

Running in the cold is painful. Your muscles tense up, and your lungs sting from the cold air. Sure, you can exercise inside, but if you do not have cardio equipment at your house, it can be a bit more difficult to lose fat. In order to combat this, I highly recommend joining a gym or a health club. Exercising with other people can be fun, and also motivating. You are more likely to succeed if you have other people to encourage you, so get out there and make connections.

4. Eat when you are hungry

If you completely deprive yourself of food, you are more likely to binge eat. Starving yourself will also make you more likely to gain weight once you begin eating normally again. In order to have long lasting weight loss results, eat whenever you are hungry, but do not overeat. Slow down your eating, and try to drink more water with your meals. This will make you feel full faster. Once you are full, stop eating. There is no reason for you to eat more than your body needs.

5. Try out a new hobby.

Hobbies can be great ways to distract yourself from stressful things, such as the cold or overeating. Before you start eating because of boredom, try to think of something else that you could do. If you get stuck, there are countless sites on the internet with lists of fun hobbies to try out. Hobbies are also beneficial because they make you more well-rounded as a person. Replace bad habits with beneficial ones, and you will not regret your decision.

6. Set weight loss goals.

Instead of trying to change all of your habits at once, set small goals for yourself. This will make the process much easier and you will be more likely to stick to what you want to accomplish. These goals could be something as simple as cutting out sodas or exercising for thirty minutes a day. If you feel like shooting for something higher, then do it. As long as you are determined, you can succeed. Remember, you are the only person who is holding yourself back.

7. Reward yourself.

Weight loss can be stressful for anyone, especially when you feel like you are constantly depriving yourself. You should reward yourself every so often, especially when you reach a goal. Your reward does not have to be a cheat day. It can be anything. You could save up your money that you would otherwise spend on junk food, and then reward yourself with an awesome article of clothing to show off your weight loss results. Remember, you are human, and rewards are a great way to motivate yourself.

8. Read inspirational quotes and stories.

It is so essential to surround yourself with support. Remember that you are not the only one who fights winter blubber. When you are feeling down on yourself, look to the internet for inspiration. Look at posts by others who have achieved great results, or look up a quote that will keep you going. These things might seem small, but they can make a gigantic difference on your outlook on your goals. Remember, our weight will go up and down throughout our lives, but no one should ever give up.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads.
