Ah, freshmen year. Nothing beats move-in day, syllabus week, and living with those who might just be your best friends for years to come. Some may have to resort to joining clubs or organizations, but for me (and many others), the infamous "Go Greek" posters that were scattered throughout the campus convinced me to rush.
Like many other freshmen guys, I could not wait to rush and immerse myself into this so-called "Greek Life" culture. With almost two years of "frat experience" under my belt, I had grown to love almost everything about Greek Life.
Well, almost all of that changed when my little sister told me that she plans on joining a sorority. By all means, I'm not the prototypical overprotective older brother, but, like any older brother could possibly imagine, here were some of my pressing thoughts that came to my head.
1. Yeah, you should definitely do it! I've met some of my best friends in Greek Life, and I'm sure you will too.
How everyone newly initiated feels.
2. Oh. My. God.
At this point, I realized what I just approved, and wished my sister would receive zero acceptance letters.
3. Everywhere she goes, I have to accept that guys will be... guys.
And here's the other kind "oh my God" that every older brother is terrified of. This is where the overwhelming amount of fear steps in.
4. You know what, it's college. Everyone is going to make mistakes and learn from them.
I would be more than guilty if I said that I didn't make a single mistake in college and had not learned from it. In today's society, girls often take more heat for making tandem mistakes, which is simply a double standard. Girls (especially to you, my younger sister), you just do you.
5. But PLEASE wear an actual costume for Halloween.
This is just another one of those things that all older brothers have to accept.
6. Well, at least you can potentially set me up with one of your sisters.
But then again, I've been through that phase before. I'll pass.
7. Even though you won't, MAKE GOOD CHOICES.
Because, at the end of the day, no older brother wants to see their little sister cry.
8. No matter what you do, or what happens, I will always be here for you.
Brothers and sisters for life.
