Whether you are a music major, a music minor, or a non-major music student like myself, you know that practice rooms are simultaneously your best friend and your worst enemy. It is inevitable that you will all too often find yourself in a practice room, a cubicle-sized room with a piano and not much else. Here are thoughts we have all had in these tiny rooms.
1. Are these things really soundproof?
Yes, that neat little sticker on the door says that the room is 100% soundproof, but you can't help but wonder if the people walking by can hear your every note
2. Do I really need to warm up?
The answer? Yes. Will you actually? Depends on the day.
3. Was there always a repeat there?
Suddenly this song just got a whole lot longer.
4. Why couldn't they have put the practice rooms in my dorm?
It's always hard to muster the motivation to make the hike across campus.
5. Have I been in here long enough to justify a food break?
We've all got to eat at some point.
6. Will people judge me if I pull out my phone?
I'm recording myself, I swear!
7. Will people be able to hear the sound of my sobs?
Some pieces are just way too difficult.
8. How long until I have to present this piece?
17 minutes? Oh, joy. I'm not panicking. You're panicking!
