8 Thoughts Had While Living In Wisconsin Durning Winter

Wisconsin is a winter wonderland for four months a year. There are a lot of annoyances that come along with that.

Living in Wisconsin has its perks. Other than an abundance of beer, cheese and meat; we also have four distinct seasons. They all have their intense features, mainly winter and summer, but winter takes the cake on extremes. Here are a few things that cross the minds of us Wisconsinites during that season.

1."It's snowing! We can go skiing!"

Or sledding, snowmobiling, tubing, snowboarding and a lot of other cool activities. Summer isn't the only fun season to spend time outside. The milder days are perfect for these, as long as its below 32°F and above single digits the entire day can be spent outside soaking up the snow and crisp air.

2. "It's too cold, I'm not going outside. In fact, can I just skip this week?"

This is the part of the winter where no one wants to be outside. If temperatures are below zero, not going outside is pretty appealing.

3. "At least we have football."

Unfortunately, this is only until January. If we're lucky, it will last until february with the Packers in the Super Bowl.

4. "I really don't want to go out and start my car."

Yes, it's so cold that we have to start our car 10 or 20 minutes before we need to drive it. This is fore a couple of reasons. One being, it's bad for your car if you don't and two, it defrosts your windows. Some of us aren't so lucky and don't have remote start or aren't close enough inside to reach the car with the key fob. So we get to go outside twice to leave.

5. "I should have bought an AWD car."

All wheel drive vehicles are a dream when it snows or freezing rains. No one likes worrying about not being able to stop or turn or accelerate when the roads aren't clear. If you have anything other than an all wheel drive or four wheel drive vehicle, chances are you've thought this a lot in the winter.

6. "I'll deal with hat hair as long as it prevents me from getting brain freeze from the outside temperature."

Yes, this is a real thing. I wish I was making this up, but sometimes it's so cold that if you're outside for more than 5 minutes you'll get a 'brain freeze' just from the outside temperature. You can usually prevent this by covering your forehead and ears.

7. "*Insert explicit word here*"

Because honestly, it's all you can do about it sometimes.

8. "Its worth all this sometimes because it's gorgeous."

Snow is gorgeous, don't even try to fight this. After it snows and the trees are still covered it, It looks like a snow globe or a photo in a museum. Its absolutely stunning.

Wisconsin winters have their perks, but for the most part we are mostly just waiting for some above freezing weather.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
