Working at a coffee shop in the wintertime is no doubt an interesting and unique experience. Here are a few things that go through your fellow baristas' minds during a typical winter shift.
1. How can so many people still want cold drinks when it’s only two degrees outside?
It’s freezing outside yet so many people choose to order iced and blended drinks. I know they taste good, but you would think people would want to drink something that might warm them up, rather than make them even colder. Just a thought.
2. Please don't make me work the drive through.
You would be surprised how cold you can get just by opening the drive thru window for a mere ten seconds. Now think of opening it for ten seconds every minute. Yeah, it gets a bit chilly
3. So many peppermint mocha's!!
You make so many peppermint mocha's in one shift that you start to smell like a candy cane. I suppose however that there are worse things you could smell like.
4. The weather's awful today, it won’t be that busy.
Joke’s on you. It could be blizzarding outside, with 50 mph. winds, and a temperature below zero and there would still be a line in the drive thru. People sure like their coffee.
5. Can someone buy me literally all of our holiday mugs?
It is always an exciting day when you get to see this year’s holiday merchandise. It’s always so cute. I want it all.
6. If I’m going to listen to the same Christmas soundtrack for two months, can I at least sing along?
Christmas music usually starts playing in the shop at the beginning of November. By the time it’s actually Christmas, you’ve memorized every single song. Why not show off all of that memorization?
7. If we were open on Christmas, people would still come.
The shop is open on Thanksgiving and it’s busy. The shop is open on Christmas Eve and it’s busy. If it was open on Christmas, it would most definitely be busy. Thankfully, it’s not.
8. At least I’m getting free coffee to help me through it all.
Even though working during this time of year can be stressful, you will always have all of that free coffee to help you through it. What a blessing.
