8 Things You Will Miss When Moving Away To College

Moving away to college is an exciting new experience. There you will make countless memories with new people and create bonds that will never be broken. Although you may seem like you will not miss home at all, here are some things to not take for granted before you leave for college.

1. Home cooked meals by your mom.

You may take these for granted while you are home, but these are the best meals that you will have and that you look forward to having when coming home for the holidays. You will get sick of the cafeteria food in no time and wish your mom was at your dorm to make you dinner.

2. Your family.

They are your biggest supporters and when they are not there when you need them, it can immediately make you home sick and want to spend time with your family. Family is forever.

3. Your bed.

The dorm beds are not always the comfiest, but at least you have another thing to look forward to when you go home. You’ll be sure to get a good night of sleep when you are at home.

4. Your pet(s).

You will miss everything about them from watching them sleep, playing with them, and even when they are annoying you while you are trying to sleep. You will want to attempt to sneak them into your dorm so you do not have to leave them.

5. Food always being in the pantry.

Being home is so nice because your mom most likely does the grocery shopping and stocks the pantry with all the delicious food you love without you having to do anything.

6. Not having to stress over laundry.

Doing laundry in the dorms is even more of a chore because you have to make sure you are free during the entire time your clothes are in the washer and dryer. If not, your clothes could get stolen or people will move them since you were not back in time to pick them up.

7. Always having a parking spot.

This may seem not important, however circling the parking lot gets pretty annoying after a while, when at home you will always have a free parking spot.

8. Quiet.

You will miss being alone in times you are trying to focus, or trying to have some down time, when your roommates are being loud or distracting.

The library. Club lib. The place every college student goes when they want to try and be a productive member of society. Who better to explain your experience than Parks and Rec?

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
