When deciding to get a scooter, there are some very important things to know before getting on and taking off. Anyone with a scooter will agree that these aspects of scooting will save you pain and maybe even some embarrassment. Here are eight things you need to know if you ride a scooter.
1. Buy a helmet
It doesn't matter how stupid you might look, wear a helmet. Who cares if you are the only one of your friends that has one? By wearing a helmet, you greatly reduce your chances of a serious head injury in the event of a wreck. There is a reason this is number one on the list.
2. Stay in the lines
When it comes to parking, stay well within the designated lines. If you have to, plan to be there when the class before yours lets out to ensure you get a real spot. Trust me, parking tickets are not fun.
3. Buy a raincoat
It does not matter if you have yet to see a drop of rain, buy a rain jacket. Get a cheap one to keep in your scooter at all times. Do not wait until you need one to buy one. Cold and wet will only begin to describe how you will feel.
4. You will crash
I do not care if you are the world's greatest driver, you will wreck your scooter at least once. It may be your fault or someone else's, but it is completely inevitable. So, WEAR A HELMET!
5. Be vigilant
Driving a scooter among a ton of cars is the equivalent of driving a small car among nothing but semis. You cannot always assume people will look out for you, so you need to constantly keep an eye out for them. Remember, you are the smaller vehicle and can be seriously hurt if someone hits you.
6. Careful with the exhaust
Parking your scooter can cause you to be crammed between two other scooters. These scooters could have just been parked which means their exhausts could be hot. Not all exhausts have covers, so be careful when you get on and off your scooter to avoid the exhausts nearby. I have personally had a second degree burn from a neighboring scooter.
7. Invest in gloves
No matter where you live, there will always be those really cold mornings that you have to get to class. A jacket is usually an obvious choice of clothing on a cold morning, but not everyone thinks of a pair of gloves. Your hands will catch a brunt force of that biting wind and will be completely numb by the time you reach your destination. Buy gloves, your hands will thank you.
8. DO NOT wear flip flops
I can tell you from experience that this is a bad choice. Closed-toe shoes are an absolute must when riding. If you are ever in an accident or need to stop last minute, flip flops will cause you a lot of pain and have no traction to help yourself stay upright. Always wear tennis shoes or flats when driving your scooter.
