8 Things You Need for Finals

Finals are just around the corner. Some of you might be totally prepared and others of you...maybe not so much. No matter which end of the spectrum you're on, here are a few things to keep in mind as you jump right into finals.

  1. Stock up on coffeeIf coffee isn’t already your best friend, it’s high time to form that friendship now. There is no possible way for you to be awake for hours at a time without losing energy and concentration. So stalk up on your favorite caffeinated drinks, and tell yourself you’re one day closer to the end.
  2. Find all of your lecture notes
Let’s be honest, there is no way you can go back and re-read all of the necessary chapters in your textbooks. It’s not the most efficient way to re-familiarize yourself with the material. Instead, gather up all of your lecture notes and mark them up with what you understand the most and least, then focus on your problem areas. If you’ve missed out on some lectures, hit up your friend or that class cutie for their notes ;)
  3. Gather your YouTube tutorials links
If you’re like me, you’ve probably forgotten specific topics or have a weak understanding of some topics in general. In that case, get ready for endless tabs on your favorite browser because it’s time to watch those Khan Academy videos on torque and voltage division.
  4. Find study groups
These can be so helpful if you set a learning goal for the day and focus enough to finish what you need to. Study groups are great because there will be people who understand topics better than you who you can ask for help and clarifications, and you can do the same for them. Get together a group of classmates that you know will put in a contributing effort.
  5. Don't forget your chargers
Nothing sucks more than being on that grind and then getting that “5%” notification, especially if you don’t study in your room. Make sure to pack these in your bag before you head out. Or else you'll be roaming the library floors asking to borrow someone else's.
  6. Always have a friend in close proximity
You absolutely most definitely need a friend during this stressful time period. There’s nothing like freaking out over a class with someone who feels the same way. Shared tears and breakdowns are the best tears and breakdowns.
  7. You deserve some breaks
Please, please, pleeeeaaase don’t keep yourself buried in your books and notes without taking some time out for yourself. Reward yourself with a few breaks here and there to re-energize.
  8. Take a deep breath and relax
Literally probably the most important thing you can do at this time is to stay as calm as you can. I mean, obviously freak out a little bit, but always come back to that calm state so you can work efficiently enough to understand that material.

You’re almost there. Just a couple more weeks, and you’re home free (until you’re back in the same position in May). Good luck!!

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.

If it hurts now, it'll hurt again. Not because you're gullible or naive, only because you fall fast, hard, and you do it every time.

We fall each and every time with the complete and utter confidence that someone will be there to catch us. Now that person we SWORE we were never going to fall for has our hearts, and every time we see them our palms start sweating. The butterflies in our stomach start to soar and our hearts are entirely too close to bursting out of our chests.
