Oh yes, growing up in New England can be a great time, but being one of the people who doesn’t like the snow or cold other get a little confused. Being one of those people here are just a few the questions I’m just a little sick of hearing:

1. “You Grew Up in it Aren’t You Used to it?”

It’s no surprise that I grew up here and that snow comes every winter of every year, but no I will never be used to it! Anyone who hates snow will never be “used to it”. You try to forget how cold and annoying snow can be, and once it comes around it again, well it’s even worse than the year before.

2. “Don’t You Love Getting Snowed In?”

The last thing I want during the cold winter months, when I can’t go to the beach, is to take it one step further and be stuck in my house for a day or two because of an uncalled-for blizzard. I would so much rather be going out and doing something fun or finishing my errands than postponing everything for a few days.

3. “How are You Even from New England?”

I think this is my least favorite questions to be asked when someone learns that for my dislike of snow. New England will forever be my first home and will always hold a special place in my heart, but not because of the snow. Snow isn’t the only season to define New England, the leaves in the fall are absolutely beautiful, the beaches in the summer are full of people and life. Snow isn’t the only seasonal aspect that gives New England beauty.

4. “You Must Love the Stuff, You Live in it for Most of the Year”

Oh yeah, being forcefully emerged in cold, wet, icy snow is exactly what I live for every year. Actually, as a matter of fact I do not enjoy being in or around snow ever, I just want to be able to hangout on the lawn or go to the beach. However, this statement is unfortunately true and New England is usually covered in snow for most of the year and well I have no choice but to live in it.

5. “You Can’t Ice Skate?!” OR “You Don’t Ski?!”

Another one of my favorite questions to be asked. No, I do not! I never have, and I never will. I have tried to make myself love the snow and the activities that you can do in it, but I can’t bring myself to enjoy the cold; never mind do ‘fun’ activities in it. On a side-note I can’t balance very well, and the skating is not easy when you can’t balance. Also, my mom and dad never taught me either because well they also don’t enjoy the snow/cold.

6. “Wouldn’t it be Amazing if it Snows on Christmas?”

Everyone wants a white Christmas, but honestly is it that big of a deal if the ground is barren? I don’t see what the hype is about the ground being covered in white, cold fluff; I mean when I was little I always wanted a white Christmas, but as soon as Christmas is over the snow is irrelevant, especially once it gets colder.

7. “More Snow Equals No School!”

Yeah, this is cool when you’re a kid and you’re just hanging out at home missing silly assignments, but I think that everyone would rather go to school when you’re supposed rather than shortening their summer vacation. I mean there is so much more you can do during the summer than during the winter. And once you’re out of school the whole “no school” thing becomes irrelevant and snow days are filled with endless boredom.

8. “Stop Being Such a Grinch, Appreciate the Snow!”

Just because I don’t like the snow doesn’t mean I’m a Grinch. I love the Christmas season and everything that comes with it, but I don’t like that cold, wet snow on the ground. Snow isn’t for everyone, and maybe that makes some people come off as a Grinch, so oh well. Not every New Englander has to love the snow.

In case you're unaware, "resting bitch face" is the term used to describe when a person's natural, expressionless face makes it look like they are mad at the world. Whether they are walking down the street or simply spacing out thinking about what to eat for dinner, it's very easy for others to assume that this person is either upset or mad at them. Because of this, those of us with Resting Bitch Face (RBF), and especially us women, have all experienced many of the same situations and conversations, including:

We've all had a crush before. Whether it leads to something or nothing, the process has all been the same. The awkward feelings, the stalking, and the stress of trying to keep this huge secret. The feeling of becoming a total spazz is something that cannot be avoided, and the most spazzy family that can relate to this feeling is the Belcher's.

At the tender age of 18, we are bestowed with the title of “adult.” For 17 years, we live under the rules and guidelines of our parents, school, and government, and to stray from any of those rules or guidelines marks us as a rebel. At 18, though, we must choose which college we want to go to or what career we want. We are allowed and encouraged to vote. We can buy lottery tickets and cigarettes. We can drop out of school, leave our household, and do other "adult" things. At 18, we start down a path of thinking for ourselves, when for the entirety of our lives other institutions have been mandated to think and do for us.

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.
