Being a waitress is actually way harder than people think. It's hard to constantly smile and be happy while giving every customer exactly what they want. I'm a waitress and have many friends that are waitresses, so here are eight things I know just about every waitress thinks/says during her shift.
1. "Yeah, letting your child throw their food everywhere is sooooo adorable. I don't have to clean that."
2. "Oh sure, a $4 tip on a $60 bill is perfect. Thanks."
No matter how hard a waitress works on some tables, he/she gets an awful tip. Here's a tip: if you can't afford to tip at a restaurant, you can't afford to eat at the restaurant. Tips are how I make almost all of my money.
3. "Oh no, you did not just do/say that to me."
The other day I was serving a table. I asked if they wanted anything else, and they all said they were fine. As I was walking away, the guy yelled, "Get me mountain dew lady," in the most disrespectful tone you can imagine. I stopped in my tracks, wanted to say about 15 rude things, but instead I smiled and said, "Of course".
4. Smiles at you, but thinks: "That was super inappropriate."
Waitresses are expected to be positive no matter what. I have literally had a man look at me and talk about me being on my knees. And as a waitress, we aren't allowed to have an attitude with you.
5. "No, no, please no. We close in five minutes."
6. "What on earth could you possibly need now?"
Ah, those lovely tables that keep the waitress running.
7. "Why haven't I been cut yet?"
8. "God bless your soul for actually being kind to me."
It's the nice ones that make every rude table worth it. To the people that are nice, thank you so so much.
