There is nothing better than a weekend at Appalachian State. I usually spend mine in my dorm room, but that is just because I’m a loner. When I’m feeling particularly outgoing I know there are so many things to do around Boone on the weekends. Here is a list of a few things you can do this weekend in Boone, and on the Appalachian State campus!

1. Visit I.G. Greer and watch a $2 movie

Yes, you can watch hit movies for only $2! Drinks are only $1 and you can get a refillable popcorn bucket for $6, refills will cost $2 and the bucket never goes out of date! An affordable movie theater is every college student’s dream. Here is a link to their showings: https://apps.appstate.edu/films.

2. Go to the Belk Library

Find a good book, one that interests you not one for class, curl up, and read the day away! My favorite section of the library are the shelves on the second floor completely devoted to 16th Century England. Belk Library has a variety of books to choose from!

3. Visit the Turchin Center

The Turchin Center for Visual Arts is located on King Street here in Boone. They have many unique exhibits from many artists and there is always a awesome event going on. From Tai Chi to Open Studio, the possibilities are endless. Visit their website for more info: https://tcva.appstate.edu/

4. Visit the Watauga Humane Society

Alright, this one is a bit off campus but it is for a great cause, and who doesn’t want to give some love to lonely animals looking for their forever homes? The Watauga Humane Society, located just off Old HWY 421, is probably the best Humane Society I have ever been to! You’re allowed to walk the dogs and play with the cats even if you’re not a volunteer. Just make sure to sanitize those hands!

5. Picnic on the Blue Ridge Parkway

During those warm Fall/Spring weekends, a trip to the Parkway with some close friends and a picnic basket can be one of the most amazing times. Bring a blanket, a bluetooth speaker, and some yummy food and you’ve got a fun day ahead of you.

6. Walk Down King Street

This is one of my favorite things to do! There are so many shops you can browse through (I suggest the Antique store) and you’ll never fail to see a cute dog on a walk with it’s owner!

7. Visit a Swimming Hole

Who needs a pools when you’ve got swimming holes? This is more of a late spring/early summer adventure. But these swimming holes are gorgeous and fun to visit. To see a list of swimming holes around Boone click here: http://boonencinfo.com/outdoor-adventures/swimming/

And Finally….. 8. Go Hiking

Hiking is one of the MUST do things while attending App State! Even if you only go once! The scenery is always beautiful and it’s a great excuse to take lots of pictures with your friends. Here’s a list of places to go hiking around Boone: http://www.exploreboone.com/outdoors/hiking/

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.
