There are many things that we are all told as high schoolers that our teachers or parents want us to believe about college. Some of them are true, but there are also a lot of inaccurate things that you are told before coming into your freshman year. Here are some of those myths:
1. Your professors are going to be a lot more strict on you than your high school teachers.
This one really shocked me. My classes are hard and my professors expect us to do the work, but they also decide when they want to have class. Sometimes they let us out early or cancel completely just because they feel like it.
2. You should always wait until the first class to buy books.
I know people that still do this but it can be stressful because they could give you homework for that night and you won't have the book to do it.
3. You will have a ton of free time.
You will have literally none.
4. It will be the best time of your life.
Freshman year doesn't count towards that; they are talking about the three years following. Freshman year is great but it's also awkward and stressful.
5. You don't need to worry about making friends because it will just work out.
You actually do have to go out of your way to make friends. It will work out, but you have to do it yourself.
6. Avoid 8 am's at all costs.
On one hand, yes, I understand trying to avoid them because they are the absolute worst, but sometimes they're just necessary. It is also nice to have the afternoon off, which can be possible by taking earlier classes.
7. Freshman 15 is unavoidable.
It really isn't. You walk everywhere, so if you're eating relatively well you should honestly be fine.
8. You never have to go to class, you just have to pass the tests.
Particular to Baylor, we have an attendance policy, so we actually do have to be in class. Still, I would suggest going class regardless of if you have to or not. You are paying to go to the class and learn the info, so it would kind of be a rip off if you never showed.
