As I've gotten older and am now spending less and less time at home, I have realized that Oswego, NY has some pretty amazing things that I miss when I'm at school. Growing up, I always thought the town was boring, but now I took the time to come up with some things that give Oswego, NY its little quirks.
1. The Lighthouse
If you haven't walked to the lighthouse, do you even live in Oswego? Everyone has walked the break wall out there and jumped in the water. Not only is it a really fun walk, but it is a good workout climbing up and down some rocks.
2. Ontario Orchards
Their apple cider and homemade cookies are to die for. The apple cider is something that will only last in my house for a couple of days because it is so yummy. It is almost impossible to go into that store without spending money on something delicious that catches your eyes.
3. Drive- In
The drive- in is packed every night of the week throughout the summer. It is a great place to go with family and friends and is very inexpensive. 3 movies for the price of one and a large snack shack option-- how could you resist that?
4. Rudy's Lakeside Drive-In
Great food with a great view-- you can eat right on the lake, and they are well known for their delicious hamburger hots. It's always packed with people, but so worth it.
Watch out for the seagulls.
5. Fort Ontario
This is a very historic site. It was occupied by the U.S. Army through World War II. From 1944 to 1946, the fort served as the only refugee camp in the United States for mostly Jewish victims of the Nazi Holocaust under an Executive Order from President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
When I was in elementary school we went on a field trip there, but if you haven't gone on a tour, I highly recommend it.
6. Fajita Grill
This place is so good that it could be the last place to eat on Earth and I wouldn't get bored of it. The queso is by far the best queso I have ever had. The hardest part about leaving for school was knowing I couldn't have access to a queso as good as the one I can get from Fajita Grill.
7. Harborfest
I mean Harbormess. This is the busiest time of the year for this town. It brings in thousand of people. Not only are there gyros, wine slushies and a ton of vendors, but there is an amazing fireworks show. It is what I look forward to most in the summer.
8. Sunsets
I saved the best for last. The sunsets we get are amazing and they never get old to look at. My favorite part about growing up in Oswego, NY is that I was lucky enough to be able to sit on a gorgeous lake and watch the beautiful sunsets it has to offer.
