Eight Things That Happen When Your Diet is Really Restricted

Rule #1: Always have snacks.

I recently found out that I have a myriad of health issues, but fortunately, most of them have been linked to food allergies that I didn't know I had. Since cutting out those foods plus others that are inflammatory while my gut heals, I have learned and experienced several new things.

1. You will carry your lunch box or small cooler around like a security blanket.

Eating out is SO hard when you have a restricted diet. Get the *coolest* lunch box you can find, and proudly tote it into Chick-fil-a as needed when your friends need food.

2. Tupperware is your BFFL.

Meal prep isn't just for trendy bloggers or body builders. To make sure you have food to eat that won't make your body self-destruct, you have to be prepared.

3. You get really creative in the kitchen.

With a limited number of ingredients, your meal options can become pretty mundane. However, if you're creative and motivated enough, you can modify just about any recipe to fit your dietary needs and culinary jealousy.

4. You feel really bad for your waitstaff at restaurants.

They may smile, and even tell you, "oh, you're fine" when you apologize, but deep down, you know that you are really annoying them. Therefore, you really try to avoid going out to eat.

5. People feel bad eating in front of you.

I hate this. A friend will say, "I feel bad eating this in front of you!" Really, it's ok. I know that I am eating this way because it allows me to have a better life, be healthier, and to have the energy to even be here with you. By all means, go enjoy that cheese covered burger and savor it a little more, just for me.

6. You may happy dance in the grocery store when you find something you can eat.

Whether it's SunButter to replace peanut butter, or a specific brand of gluten free pasta that you love but have trouble finding, these little victories can make you jump for joy.

7. You ALWAYS have snacks.

Again, in that handy-dandy lunch box ( and possibly in your backpack, car, etc. ), you will always have extra, allergen free snacks for times when you need extra food, find yourself in an awkward eating situation where you would otherwise be the only one not eating, or if you blood sugar gets too low.

8. You feel SOOOO much better

You are eating this way for a reason, after all. In my case, it's to heal my entire body and regulate my blood sugar, and I can tell you it definitely makes a difference. Once you cut things that hurt you, you won't even miss them anymore. In my case, gluten, dairy, and several other common foods are like a manipulative boyfriend. Once you realize they're a problem, you don't want to give them up, but when you do, you quickly start to feel so good that you don't even miss them.

So, don't be discouraged friends! Work hard to take care of your body especially if it needs more care than others. After all, you only get one!

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

For those long nights that turn into mornings when the struggle is real.

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."
