8 Things That Happen When You Spend A Semester Away From School

Sometimes you or your friends will spend a semester away from school and you do not know how things are going to change or how you are going to deal with no classes, exams, parties, and most importantly, all of your friends around you. Here are eight things that happen when you spend time away from school.

1. You Only Talk To Certain People

When you go away, you miss everyone but you realize that the people who really matter, you will stay in contact with. It might not be like you are used to every night of going out and catching up or twice a week. It might turn into once a week you have a quick catch up, or every other week. But the people you talk to while you are away for the semester are the people that you will have around your whole life.

2. Less Use of Social Media

When you are gone, you do not really have as much desire to be on social media. You find yourself always off doing other things, like adventuring around wherever you are, finding new people in your area and making the most of the free time you have now that you do not have the rest of the stress.

3. Missing Campus

When you are away you miss the beauty, the excitement and everything that comes with it on campus. You realize how much you have loved the place you have spent the last couple of years You miss the river that splits campus, the tress in the fall and the squirrels that own the whole scene.

4. Missing The Scene

No only do you miss campus but you miss the local bars, the restaurants that only exist in the town you are used to and the traditions that come with the place you are used to. You no longer have rama or bash on Thursdays, the late night run to Conrads after a long and exciting night and Grand River being filled with all the students from all over.

5. Missing Tailgating

If you are gone during football season then you have the unfortunate issue of missing those tailgates that you look forward to all year. You miss the food, the beer and the games. You miss all of the alumni and the current freshman covered in green and white. Where everyone is friends and chanting "Let's Go State".

6. Missing The Izzone Campout

For those who love basketball, the Izzone campout is a tradition that is exciting and most of all means that basketball is right around the corner. The night you spend sleeping out under the stars with you friends waiting to meet Izzo and the rest of the team.

7. Actually Missing Classes

After a while you get used the free time but you kind of miss the craziness of classes, group projects, exams and the homework.

8. The Part Time Jobs

If you have a part time job while at school you start to miss the people you worked with, the regular customers you had connections with and maybe even your boss.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
