There are many things that all band kids do. We practice a lot. We have a majority of our friends in the band program. However, there are many things that really only band kids know and all too well.
1. Spit. Everywhere!
When you play a wind instrument spit comes with the air. Eventually it all collects, usually in one spot in the instrument. It is equally gross and satisfying when you empty it out.
2. When you say you are in band and someone immediately assumes you are in “a band.”
Ugh, this has happened to me countless times. I mean do I look like a rebellious teenager that screams in my garage and only knows how to play a couple of songs on my instrument.
3. When someone requests that you play a part from a pop song on the radio.
Yeah, pop music is catchy and fun to sing, but from a sheet music perspective most pop music is very boring.
4. When someone gives you some critique on your playing even though they have absolutely no musical experience.
Come on. I did not spend countless hours counting out rhythms and practicing in the bathroom so I could hear my tone to be criticized by someone who does not even know how to read music.
5. Knowing someone’s personality by the instrument they play.
I use this even in college. When someone says that they played flute or clarinet I immediately know how what kind of person they are.
6. Being immune to the band room smell
Apparently, this is a thing! Whenever I bring my friends into the band room they always complain about the strange smell.
7. Being under-appreciated
We all know the feeling. When the band program wins first place in the majority of their completions and gets a superior in assessments, then the school decides to give even more money to sports.
Last, and best of all,
8. Being able to go to the band room and immediately feeling at home.
Friends that honestly feel like family all in one room. What more could I ask for?
