When you graduate high school, people often tell you college years are the best years of your life and you'll have so much freedom. Growing up, college always looked so much fun from the outside looking in. Now that we're in college we're experiencing things for ourselves. We're learning that these people are LIARS. Here's what the neglected to tell you...
1. Your First Two Years Are Free...Unless You Take an Online Class
In Tennessee, we have a wonderful program called the Tennessee Promise. Your first two years at a Community College are "free." Which they are. But those of us who have jobs to go to have online classes which this program says "Haha, no" to. This is a great program but just know you do have to pay money out of pocket. Start saving!
2. On Top of the Leftover Tuition, Don't Forget $100 Access Codes
Professors don't even want a textbook (which is fine) but we have to pay hundreds of dollars for a piece of paper with letters and numbers on it.
3. iPads/Devices are "required"
These devices are cool and all but we really just use them to watch TV during class.
4. Adjunct Faculty Who Haven't Taught in Years and Now Teach Upper Level Courses
Not all adjunct faculty are useless but teaching yourself all your upper level courses has become a talent.
5. Biology Lecture and Lecture 2.0
When you take Bio, you SHOULD have lab and lecture. In most cases, it's lecture and lecture 2.0.
6. Bio II for Majors and We Aren't Dissecting
Aside from having basically two lectures, the professor decides we aren't going to dissect because a 2 hour class isn't long enough.
7. Application for Graduation
Oh, we have to apply to graduate?
8. Transfer Advising a Year in Advance
I thought we would schedule an appointment right before we transfer. Nope. We have to start the process a year in advance.
9. Exit Exams
Apparently if you're receiving an Associate's Degree you have to schedule to take an exit exam. And they're only offered a few times a month at wacky times you're usually in class.
With all of this being said, I am extremely grateful for Community College and what it has taught me. I am blessed to have been able to be a part of such an awesome program that encourages students to further their education. To those of you currently attending or planning to attend, take these things into consideration.
