Even though Stony Brook University is part of the State University of New York system, this campus is not like of any of the others. Here are 10 things only Stony Brook University students understand:
1. The Sac Loop
Ever wonder why about one hundred students wait around the SAC on Thursday or Friday nights? On face value, this long bus route does not appear to have a second purpose. However, all freshmen will learn by the end of their orientation weekend the other function of this loop. Essentially, it is where students get picked up to go to parties off campus.
2. Roth Regatta
This is honestly one of the most exciting events on campus. Roth Regatta consists of major on-campus organizations creating their own boats out of only cardboard and tape. The boat is then raced across Roth Pond in Roth Quad. Even if you are not an engineering major, it is one of the most popular events and everyone should participate. The best part, you do not need to reside on campus to become involved in the event.
3. USG’s Brookfest & Back to the Brook
Each year during the fall and spring semester, the Undergraduate Student Government brings a performer to come to campus. The tickets are usually fairly priced and for the most part the artists are well-known. During the fall semester of my freshman year, I was able to see Fetty Wap and RL Grime for $10.
4. The “Far Beyond” Posters
This does not even need further explanation. If you attend Stony Brook University or simply walk on campus, you know that the university prides itself on the idea that Stony Brook University students go “far beyond” Long Island. It is a clever and accurate phrase, however, the university is over exploiting it. For example, it is plastered all over campus and in every single email I have received from the university.
5. Cherry Blossom Trees
One of my favorite parts of the campus is during the Spring when the cherry blossom trees bloom on campus. They may make my allergies ignite, however, it creates a very calming vibe on campus, especially during finals week. Along with this idea, they also make the university look extremely aesthetically pleasing.
6. The No Drink Policy In The Library
This is probably one of the most frustrating policies at the university. If you are one of the braver students, you will risk getting berated by the library staff for bringing your Starbucks drink into the North or Central reading room. Throughout your first year, you learn how to sneak it in (hint: put it in a water bottle) or discover alternative places to study on-campus.
7. The Irritating Use of Blackboard
Even though Blackboard is supposed to make your college experience easier, it is probably the root of most student’s stress. For those who do not use this program at their home university, Blackboard is essentially an online program where professors post and grade assignments. However, this program does not always work and will crash when you try to submit that assignment at 11:58 for your 11:59 deadline.
8. Staller Steps
During the Spring, this is probably one of the most iconic places on campus. The Staller Steps are a set of elongated steps that go from the entrance of the theatre all the way up to one of the side entrances of the library. Students gather to study or hang out during the warmer days. It is usually packed throughout the month of April.
When I made the decision to attend Stony Brook University, I was not aware of the impact of these aspects of the campus on my experience. However, new students will learn that this huge campus has a lot to offer and you make your experience what you want it to be. I am glad I decided to become a Seawolf!
