8 Things My Little Brother Needs To Hear From His Sister
RaeNona Claramunt

In January of 2000, my life changed for the better. My best friend was brought into this world. He's now 16, and we all know how teenage boys respond to love and advice from their big sister. These are just a few things he needs to hear from me.

1. I care about you more than I care about myself.

You're my little man. I've loved you since the day I met you. Heck, I even had mom change your name while you were in her belly. You're my brother. You're my best friend. I want the world for you. I'd take a bullet for ya, kid.

2. Be the man you'd want me, or your daughter, to have.

Always respect women. Always treat others how you'd want to be treated. Never forget that. You've seen me through countless amount of breakups and heartbreaks, you've seen qualities that make up a good or bad boyfriend. I have confidence that you will be the perfect husband someday.

3. Learn from my mistakes.

I know I've made a lot of them, but take them into consideration and take the lessons I've learned, and use them in your life. I want you to learn from every decision I've made, bad or good.

4. Continue to work hard.

You're brilliant. You're a go-getter. Never lose that. Keep getting good grades, keep pushing yourself. I know you will succeed with whatever you want to do, just never give up.

5. Be nice to mom & dad.

I know being a teenage boy sucks, and you enjoy being a pain sometimes. But, they love you. I love you. They're your parents and they will be there for you through thick and thin, just like how they were there for me through heartbreak, bullies, my college decisions, friendships ending, etc. Involve mom in your life, be kind in response to what silly things dad says.

6. Never stop making me laugh.

Our weekly FaceTime sessions are what get me through my bad days. You have the ability to make me laugh with almost anything you say. Not many people can do that. So, I need you to know that I might still be calling you when we're states away with families of our own because I need my little brother to make me smile.

7. The right girl will come along.

But first, I must approve.

Some day, you will find the perfect girl for you. Just know that I will need to approve and will need to do a quick background check. No girl will be able to get away with hurting my little brother.

8. You're the best, and I know you best.

I mean for real, we went through awkward stages together. I know what kind of person you are, I know what kind of food you hate, I know how to make you laugh. I know you better than anyone, and that means I will always be here. I'll always know how to help you. I'll always be your best friend.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
