When my best friend started dating her boyfriend, I knew things were going to change. I thought it would be nice to inform her boyfriend of all the things that will occur while they’re in a relationship from my viewpoint. So here it goes.
1. Be prepared to feel like the third wheel.
Sure she loves you, but she and I are on a different level. It’s like we were separated at birth and we have this friendship that no one else can understand. Anytime you want to go to dinner, I guarantee I will invite myself to join you guys. Don’t worry, you’ll get your alone time, but I can’t miss the opportunity for free food. Did I mention you’ll most likely end up paying for both of us? We’re kind of a package deal.
2. Anything you say or do will always be told to me.
This isn’t to creep you out, just be aware that we can’t keep secrets from each other. She will screenshot your conversations and send them to me. We will stalk all of your social media anytime we’re suspicious. There are no secrets in this relationship. Don’t be alarmed, this is perfectly normal.
3. However she feels about you is how I’m feeling too.
You make her happy, I’m happy. You make her mad, I’m mad. Moral of the story: her emotions are mine too. Try to stay on both of our good sides and you’ll be just fine.
4. I know everything about you.
From the moment you two began talking, I had to start my investigating. If I was going to have to share my time with her, it had to be with the right person. I needed to make sure you weren’t some ex-con trying to ruin my life. By the way, how was your cousin’s son’s birthday last Wednesday? See -- I told you I know everything.
5. Rarely will you get pictures of just the two of you.
Like I said before, I’m more than likely going to accompany you two everywhere you go. Those cute couple selfies? More like cute squad of three photos. Forget asking me to take cute pictures of you guys, I’ll always be joining the picture. It’ll make for excellent options when you’re choosing a woman crush Wednesday photo!
6. If you’re looking for the perfect gift for her, I’m the one to ask.
We’ve grown to have similar tastes in the things we like. Somewhere along the line, she is sure to have mentioned to me something she would love you to buy for her. She’s always going to tell you that you don’t need to buy her anything, but I know what she really wants. Feel free to always ask me if you need a tip on what to buy. P.S. I’m expecting presents too.
7. I will never be against you.
I’ve seen how happy you make her and for that I’ll always have your back. Unless of course you give me a reason not to, which we may need to have a chat about. As long as you treat her right, I’ll defend you to anyone. In fact, I was the one who encouraged her to talk to you. You can thank me later for that.
8. She’ll always be my best friend first.
The bond between two best friends is pretty unbreakable. Sure, you have your place in her life, but I’ll also always have mine. We’re going to have to figure out how to share our time with her because if you take her away from me, I guarantee it will not end well. Please always treat her like she’s the most important person in the world because she means the world to me.
May every girl’s best friend understand that her boyfriend will always have a special part in their relationship. To all the boyfriends out there: don’t be alarmed by any of the information, just know that it comes with being in a relationship with my best friend.
