My forever home.

8 Things I Miss About Tupelo, MS

As my third week of college starts, I slowly realize how homesick I am starting to get. I was born and raised in Tupelo, MS. It's the only place I feel truly at home every time I pull into 38801. I love my time at MSU, but lets be real, home is where the heart is.

  1. Connies Check-Ins

There was no way to start a true day at Tupelo high than going to Connie's right before school or getting a check-in… most likely a check-in.

2. Sonic dates

Yes, Starkville has a sonic, but its not the same. Tupelo Sonic on Main St. is hands down the homiest sonic ever. I will never forget the dance offs held in the sonic parking lot or the accents we used to order our food with.

3. Ballard Park

Whether it was a game of “soccer,” parking in the gravel road to have a rap battle against JT, or just taking the long way home. Lets be real, Ballard park was quite possibly in the top 5 hang out places.

4. Downtown Tupelo

The stores, the restaurants (CRAVE!) just the atmosphere of downtown is why it made it on this list. Yes, the traffic lights are crazy annoying, but Cafe 212 is worth the wait. There's always something going on downtown, whether its gumtree, a concert at The BancorpSouth Arena (My first job) or a show at the Lyric Theatre (FAVORITE PLACE IN TUPELO). Downtown Tupelo’s atmosphere is unexplainable, it's alive.

5. High School Football

The lights come up on a Friday night and the students are in their section. I may not know much about football, but going to THS and being in the Student section sure made me feel like I did. My favorite part of THS Friday night’s were definitely the random things, lets be real where else do you get to freely play dress up and not be judged? I’ll never forget the nights spent watching our guys play on the blue turf. #themblanketsforever

6. THE FOOD.

Connies, China Capital, Thai Garden, Johnnies, Ichiban, Nautical Whimsey, Cafe 212, Crave, Finnys, Dairy Cream, D’casa, I could go on for days…..But I think I’ve said enough.

7. Seeing my friends everyday.

The downfall of going to college is that not all of your friends will go to the same school as you anymore. That was the best part about Tupelo, friends were just a phone call away. Never too far and (lets be real) never far enough at times. I love you Dear Ole State, but I miss my friends who went to Ole Miss too. It's a whole different ball game in college and I never thought I would be without some of my friends. The comfort of walking through the halls of THS and always seeing familiar faces was the best.

8. Home.

The feeling of being in Tupelo, MS is something unexplainable and incomprehensible. Tupelo, MS, a big, wonderful group of people where you know you will never meet a real stranger. I don't know if its like this in every small town, but in mine, Tupelo is home no matter wherever I go or how far I go.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
