Being on break from college is bittersweet. You get to see your friends and eat good food, but you lose the college independence we all love. You're used to living by your own rules and making your own decisions and suddenly, you have a curfew again. But when it comes down to it, there's a lot I miss about home when I'm back at school. And maybe it's just the Sunday scaries before another college week begins, but being back at school is definitely bittersweet.

Here are eight things I miss about home when I'm back from break:

1. Home cooked meals.

Dining hall food sucks. I've been at college for about seven months and I avoid eating in the dining hall as often as possible. You can only eat a certain amount of sandwiches, pasta, and pizza before it turns repulsive. Nothing beats a home cooked meal.

2. Not having to do work.

Let's be honest, college would be so much better if we didn't have to do the whole school part. But you come to college for an education and as much as studying and doing homework sucks, you have to do it. But when I'm home for break, school work is the furthest thing from my mind. It's nice to be able to have time to yourself without the chaos that is college.

3. Showering.

Showering barefoot. Good water pressure. Hot water. I never appreciated a good shower until I came to college, and now I make sure that it is the first and last thing I do during break. Being able to take a long, hot shower is something I did not think I'd have to give up in college, but now I often find myself showering in freezing water in the tiny cubicle they call a shower.

4. Sleeping.

I barely sleep at school. It might just be me, but my nights always end late and my mornings start early. Every time I come home from college, I sleep an excessive amount. I find myself waking up past noon far too often. Being able to sleep in a big, comfortable bed is something I definitely miss when I'm at school.

5. Having Your Own Space.

Having a roommate has its upsides and its downsides. I love having a roommate because it's like living with my best friend. But at the same time, I like having my own space. I like being to stay up late without having to worry about my roommate sleeping or being able to play music loudly if I want to. Plus, dorm rooms are tiny.

6. Your Parents.

As much as being independent for the first time in your life is awesome, not being able to have the comfort of your parents definitely sucks. I miss my mom's advice and comfort so much at school. Sometimes phone calls just aren't enough and you need to actually be with your parents.

7. Driving.

I love driving. Not only is driving an easy and quick way to get places, driving for me is a way to clear my mind when I'm stressed. I love just getting in my car and driving aimlessly when I have a lot on my mind. And although most colleges have some form of a bus system, they just don't compare to actually driving yourself.

8. Your Home Friends.

Whenever I come home from school and see my home friends for the first time in months, it's like we were never apart in the first place. Leaving my friends and going back to school is definitely one of the hardest parts of going back to college after break.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
