The anticipated month of October is finally among us! I think it's safe to say that the majority of us have been looking forward to this month all year long. Now, each of us enjoy this time for specific reasons. Each of our reasons highlight the individual elements of this month that we believe make it as enjoyable as it is, so I thought I might share some of the reasons why I love October.

1. The Colors

The bold, ironically warm natural colors of fall in the cool weather give me a sense of comfort. Every time I see leaves falling from their trees, I secretly anticipate their imminent change from the various shades of green to the brilliant hues of red, yellow, and orange. Of course, here in Oklahoma, the leaves might get a little overwhelming, but it's still breathtaking to witness this change in nature.

2. The Various Scents

Each month has specific scents that identify themselves as well as the season they occur in. Typically, the scents for October have something to do with pumpkins, apples, or various spices (or both). While I enjoy these scents as much as the next person, I also enjoy the scents of warm rustic woods or fall foliage. These scents always get me in the mood for the approaching autumn season.

3. Cooler Weather

I remember leaving my dorm last week without assuming that the weather would drastically change. Boy, was I wrong! As soon as I stepped out, a brisk, cool breeze had me rushing back inside to grab a light jacket and, surprisingly, it didn't phase me. I was inwardly satisfied that the blistering hot weather was done torturing us for the year. This also means that we can put the summer wardrobe away and whip out the various sweaters, hoodies, scarves, beanies, and gloves we have waiting patiently in our closets.

4. Friday Night Football Games

Now, I realize that most schools around here started playing in August, but there's a certain element that comes from the games in October that make it so enjoyable. Perhaps it's the number of blankets that are brought to each game due to the sudden drop in temperature as the games goes on? The concession stand's hot drinks and food that help fight the cold? Either way, nothing beats a nice, competitive game of football on a late Friday night.

5. Halloween

One of the most anticipated holidays of the year where you get to dress up as anything you want to be for a night without receiving any judgement (depending on your costume choice). Not to mention the loads of candy you can get from knocking on random peoples' doors at a late hour and the various festivals, pumpkin patches, haunted houses and hayrides. Some even enjoy the haunting atmosphere on Halloween which I can understand, but there is a definite extent. Regardless, it's still in my list of favorite holidays.

6. Scary Movie Marathons

In addition to the Halloween spirit, there comes the various movies from the horror and thriller genres telecast throughout October, and I find that the best ones are shown closer to Halloween. It's always fun to curl up with a cup of apple spice tea and watch a Halloween movie marathon on ABC Family or Netflix whenever you have nothing else to do.

7. Warm Beverages

Time to fill up the Keurig filter, folks! Warm beverages are back in the everyday norm in the cold weather from a steaming cup of hot chocolate to a piping hot cup of tea! Not only does it fight off chills from the nipping breeze, but it's enough to make you feel comfortable during some downtime.

8. TV Show Premieres

Probably one of the greatest reasons why I enjoy October so much is because of the premiering seasons of some of my favorite TV shows! "The Walking Dead" season premieres usually happen in October, and this upcoming season is going to be intense! Not only that, but "Supernatural" has finally premiered their 12th season. I remember watching both of the previous seasons' finales for these shows and thinking, "October couldn't come soon enough!" Now, for those who aren't fans of the living dead or attractive monster hunters, there are numerous premieres scheduled for this month that are either imminent or have already happened, and I just as excited for those as I am for the shows that I watch.

October is filled with all sorts of fun activities and exciting events with elements that make it undeniably enjoyable. I hope that each of you enjoy this month as much as I do!

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
