8 Things I Learned Going to College In My Hometown

It's senior year of high school, you're stuck trying to pick what college to go to... and after all the commotion you pick your hometown school (Go Noles!). Though I didn't plan to go to Florida State after spending my entire childhood in Tallahassee, I've learned a few things going to college as a local.

1. People from out of town automatically think you know the ins and outs of campus.

I looked just as much like a confused and helpless freshman on my first day just as much as you did, friend.

2. As much as I love my parents, driving that far distance to campus makes me want to rip my hair out.

Live at home, they said. It's not that bad, they said.

3. Parents weekend is literally every weekend.

"Where are you going?" "What time is the game?" "Can we come?"

4. You know all the secret, hidden gems in your town.

You always get classmates that get so excited about going outside of college town and "finding" this really cool lake, or restaurant. And you're just like "yeah that's literally been there since I've been alive."

5. Having a job that you've been working at since high school makes life easier.

As a local, you can keep your high school part-time job and work towards a raise or moving up. Coming from out of town, you have no idea where to work, where to go, and you usually don't know anyone there.

6. HAVING A CAR!

As much as I hate driving to campus, I still love having my car with me. Bless the souls of those from out of town who have to walk everywhere.

7. You don't have to make all new friends.

It is literally one of the best feelings going into a class of 500 and automatically seeing at least 2 people I know from high school, they are like built-in group project members.

8. Not having to buy groceries.

Living with mom and dad might drive me nuts but they buy me everything I need so I'm rollin' in the dough.

Before I started at FSU, I was under the impression I would hate going to college in my hometown. But after realizing I don't actually have to 100 percent adult yet, I think I am able to cope with it better.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
