8 Things I've Learned About Living in a Dorm
Caroline Kredensor

I survived my first semester of college and living in an all girls dorm. Everyone always claims that "living in a dorm is the best time of your life." And they aren't wrong. Over the past couple of months, I learned a lot about living on a hall and sharing a communal bathroom.

1. Shower shoes.

Before i came to college, I thought everyone was just exaggerating when they warned me to wear shower shoes. But they were right. When a bunch of girls are sharing a comm bathroom, it can get pretty gross.

2. Take the stairs during class changes.

With so many floors of girls, you're guaranteed to be late for class if you wait for the elevator. By the time it gets to your floor, it's probably already full and you will just have to wait for the next one to come.

3. Do your laundry at unusual times.

One time I walked into the laundry room and two girls were about to get into a fist fight over the last washer. It's easier to just do your laundry early in the morning or late at night because you wont have to wait in line.

4. Always keep snacks in your room.

The dining hall food is gross. It's nice to be able to come back to your room and have some snacks you actually enjoy.

5. Figure out the best way to study.

Personally, I can't study in my room. I end up taking a nap on my couch or talking to the girls next door. Each person has to be able to find their own way balance school work.

6. You'll find a way to sleep through anything.

Screaming girls, someone singing in the shower, your roommate studying with the light on, the neighbors watching an action movie, your alarm for your 8am class. When you're exhausted from school, you'll probably find a way to sleep through it.

7. Keep it clean

When your room is tiny, one shirt on the ground makes you feel like your whole life is a mess. Keeping it clean helps you have one less stressor in your life.

8. Your roommate might become your best friend.

I'm thankful I have someone to experience college with who is there for me 24/7.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.
