Here's a list of things you'd probably know all too well if you're an international student.
1. Jet Lags!
This is by far one of the most frequent things we experience each year during vacations! It is also probably the only time I make my 8 a.m. classes.
2. Food.
Let us take a moment to talk about food. Why are you not spicy anymore?
3. Saying your name a billion times while introducing yourself before people finally get it.
4. Hearing people say, "You don't have an accent."
Yes, we don't all have accents and do know English pretty well. Even though it is not our primary language, we speak it pretty often along with at least two other languages. We will take that compliment anyway, because it absolves us of all the guilt we harbor of sleeping in our English classes in high school.
5. Breaking common misconceptions about your culture that have been perpetuated over the years.
"Yes I am an Indian, and no my house doesn't smell of spices."
6. The Time-Zone Challenge
It sucks when your entire support system is on the other side of the world. So when you're having an existential crisis at midnight, you don't know whom to talk to because its 12 in the afternoon back home. However, your best friend always comes through, so yay!
7. "Which Place Do You Call Home?"
This, by far, is one of the most challenging aspects of being an international student. However, it feels great to have at least two places on the opposite sides of the globe to call your home!
