As current hockey girlfriend and in honor of college hockey season starting off. I thought it was time to write about how my boyfriend changed the way I think about hockey and the way I look at relationships.
1) Watching him play like this...
If you date a goalie this should be something super relatable! Whenever the puck gets in our zone, I'm always nervously on the edge of me seat. Even girls with boyfriends who play out can relate! Whenever they get hit hard or or get hurt, you cant help but worry every time they play.
2) "SATURDAY IS FOR THE BOYS!"
The brotherhood between a hockey player and his teammates is something that CANNOT be broken. So be ready to go out with the girls or grab a beer and watch the bromance because Saturday is for the boys. And, lets be real here if he's not "ferda" does he really play hockey?
3) When winter comes along, you can put hot chocolate and cuddling at the bottom of the list. Instead it's pond hockey, sledding, or ice skating.
Winter is primetime for dates for hockey player. I mean come on, they live basically in an ice rink. Being outside in the cold and snow is no big deal for these guys, so get yourself a nice jacket!
4) That moment when you walk into the rink wearing a hoodie, sweatpants, and carrying a blanket and there are girls there with t-shirts and shorts on.
As you walk in alone or with his parents looking warm, comfy, and not on fleek as hell, you can't help but notice who else is there. Groups of girls all in their shorts and long selves, who leave during the first intermission. GURL come on.
5) A night in together may or may not get interrupted by an invitation to pick up hockey.
an unplanned night of lazying watching tv together has potential of being cut short if there is pick up somewhere. It's nothing against you but hey ice time is everything.
6) "I can't tonight, I have practice."
Is it only me or did you too think you were getting ignored when he told you he had practice at 9:30 at night?!? Yes, it is true, practice, pick up, or even games can be super late at night. If he loves the sport, he'll give up the hours to sleep to get on the ice.
7) Play fighting is definitely not as fun as play chirping.
As time together goes by you start to pick up all the chirps his teammates use on him. This is a GREAT advantage to you for when you both get in the mood to start roasting each, for no reason. "you're dusty" "You hoser" "You sieve". In many weird weird ways its how you tell each other you love one another. Also, in another predictable way it can start a brawl, always be prepared to drop the gloves.
8) Even though he may love the sport, he makes sure loving you comes first.
Although during hockey season he may be super busy, he always give time for you. He'll give up a pick up game or tell the boys, "not tonight" to be with you. He'll give you the remote during a game (as long as the Blackhawks aren't playing) to let you pick what to watch. He may be a hockey player, but he's a romantic too.
