December is a special month in our nation’s capital because wherever you go, you’re surrounded by holiday spirit and beautiful decorations. If you want to make the most of the seasonal fun, use this list as inspiration to explore the winter wonderland that is D.C. this winter.
1. Winter Igloos at The Watergate Hotel.
Spend a night at The Watergate Hotel to enjoy the fun winter igloos. While it’s a little pricey ($100 for a two-hour rental), you can get a group of your friends together and treat yourselves to a luxurious night!
2. Georgetown GLOW.
Reimagine the season of lights and head to Georgetown to see tons of illuminated artworks showcased in Georgetown GLOW. Local and internationally celebrated artists display their works throughout the neighborhood from 5 to 10 p.m., Dec. 8 through Jan. 7.
3. ICE! at National Harbor.
Drive 15 minutes out of the city to National Harbor for its annual ICE! winter wonderland. From scenes of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer to ice carvings every direction you look, this is a great stop for the entire family. You can visit now through Jan. 1.
4. Water Skiing Santa in Old Town Alexandria.
On Christmas Eve, you can go to the historical Old Town Alexandria to see something you’ve probably never seen before: Santa on water skis. There will even be flying elves — seriously something you’ve probably never seen!
5. Miracle on 7th Street Pop Up Bar.
This is the third year the Miracle on 7th Street bar is popping up in D.C. If you’re looking to add some holiday vibes to your Insta-feed, you can’t miss this awesome stop.
6. ZooLights.
Explore the wild side of holiday festivities with an after-hours visit to ZooLights at the Smithsonian National Zoo. This month-long event (Nov. 24 to Jan. 1) illuminates the zoo with more than 500,000 lights, awesome music and more.
7. Downtown Holiday Market.
Visit the Downtown Holiday Market (located at 8th and F Streets NW) to find a mix of unique trinkets and gifts, diverse music
8. National Christmas Tree.
The National Christmas Tree might be surrounded by tourists 24/7, but it’s still a D.C.-local favorite. Located directly in front of the White House, the tree is a unique and creative display. You can even stop by the beautiful Willard hotel afterward for a drink to warm up.
