I mention a lot that I'm an art major. I guess there are a lot of reasons for this, but the main ones are because 1. I absolutely love my major, 2. It is usually a lesser populated major on campus, making it kinda unique, and 3. It gets put down as a "useless" thing to study a lot of the time. Anyways, I'm proud of what I study and I like to write about it. That being said, here's a little look into the art life, as told by Harry Potter gifs (because along with my passion for art, I also really enjoy HP). Art major struggles, triumphs, and everyday life things.

1. When you get paint on your good clothes.

Since you have art classes every day, you can't just wear old painty clothes 24/7, because you have other things to do besides paint. But sometimes paint/clay/whatever else gets on your clothes, and it can't be helped. And it's sad (but it happens a lot).

2. Critiques, all day every day.

A big part of art is learning to critique your own work, and others. A LOT of time is spent sitting together as a class, making comments on people's work and getting comments on your own. It's helpful, but not always the most exciting thing. And you learn to really describe a piece, or dig deep to come up with something impressive to say.

3. When your professor compliments your work.

That feeling when you're working on a project, and you don't think it looks very good, and then your prof actually likes it and encourages you...it's the best.

4. But also, when your prof roasts you.

Sometimes you think your piece looks really good, and then your professor comes by and totally picks out all of the mistakes and weak spots, and then you feel really bad about it. In the end, though, the prof is usually right, and the constructive criticism helped, even if it was hard the hear.

5. New supplies.

That feeling when you open a new pack of pencils, or your professor hands out fresh paintbrushes. YES.

6. Paying multiple lab fees every semester.

Those supplies aren't free. Studio courses require paying a lab fee, usually over $100 for every class. So it's pretty normal to have lots of extra charges on your bill. Oh well.

7. You never have to write papers.

Sorry not sorry, but you don't do a lot of written work/reading/homework, except when it comes to art history. But that is not saying you don't do anything. Don't forget to count how many hours you spent in the studio outside of the class and on weekends getting projects done.

8. You are forever proud of your choice in majors.

You love the projects, the creativity, and the way you spend your time. You wouldn't want to major in anything else.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
