8 Things I Miss About High School: Spring Valley Edition

Good morning, Grizzlies. Go, fight, win! Don't forget there is a meeting after school today. Have a great day, Grizzlies!

If you went to Spring Valley High School, that phrase probably sounded all too familiar to you. Before college, high school was the best four years of my life. I made tons of friends, joined nearly every club possible, strived to raise my GPA and even had the opportunity to travel to Japan.

Spring Valley gave students a lot of opportunity to get involved, and there's no denying we were the real SV.

Here are eight things I miss about high school, but specifically, Spring Valley High School:

1. Extracurricular Activities

In high school, I was extremely involved. If I were to tell you every club that I took part in during my high school years, you probably wouldn't believe me. But I'll tell you anyway.

I was in the Japanese club, Korean club, Chinese club, Peace club, Speech and Debate, video production; I was a part of our Grizzly News Network, a peer mentor and how could I forget Key Club? Also, I was an AP and honor student, so I basically lived off little to no sleep and I drank lots of coffee.

As overwhelming as this list may seem, being involved in different clubs earned me tons of friends with similar interests, and definitely helped build my resume for college. I always looked forward to the end of the day because of these after school activities. Although most kids went straight home, that was not the life for me.

2. The Teachers

Even though we slept through their classes and never did their homework, you have to admit, Spring Valley had some of the best teachers we'll probably ever know. They cared, and pushed us to be better than we were yesterday. They wanted us to learn and succeed. I couldn't be more thankful for the teachers that I had at Spring Valley.

3. Spirit Week

I tried to be cool and act like Spirit Week never phased me, but honestly, I loved it. We had a lot of fun, especially getting creative during spirit days. I personally saw it as a fun fashion challenge, and you may have seen it as a way to show off your goofy, yet fabulous, side.

4. Spirit Assemblies

My favorite assembly every year was the Battle of the Sexes assembly. I miss cheering and yelling at the boys and just showing off our girl power (because girls rule and boys drool, right?).

Also, admit it; we all enjoyed having shortened class periods on these days.

5. Key Club

I FEEL GOOD, OH I FEEL SO GOOD, I FEEL FINE ALL OF THE TIME, UNGA UNGA UNGA

Does that sound familiar, Key Club members?

Not to sound sappy, but Key Club truly was more than just community service. Key Club taught me how great it felt to give back. I did join so that I could add it to my college resume, but in the end, I fell in love with it.

6. Speech and Debate and MUN

Although these two organizations had their ups and downs with one another, Speech and Debate and Model United Nations were both amazing programs at Spring Valley. If I had never joined Speech and Debate, I would probably be a completely different person. Speech and Debate provided me with communication skills that still helps with all aspects of my life. I also had a lot of friends in MUN who held it close to their hearts as well. Those of us who were in one (or both) of these organizations should be beyond proud of all of the things we accomplished as the Spring Valley Grizzlies. We came prepared and ready to win!

7. Sports Games

It was fun spending your Friday night out on the field cheering your team on. We may not have won every game but we sure made our school proud.

8. Graduation

June 4, 2015 was the day my class walked across that graduation stage. We got our diplomas, saw our names on it, and it made it all real. That single piece of paper showed us that all of our hard work paid off. It was a piece of paper filled with memories, laughs and tears. It was filled with adventures, friendships and bonds that would last a lifetime. Together, we had overcome many challenges, and many of us are all over the world pursuing our own dreams.

One thing we all still have in common is that we'll never forget our time at Spring Valley High School.

Once a Grizzly, always a Grizzly.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
