8 Superfoods You Should Incorporate Into Your Diet

Everyone knows avocado to be a superfood. You know, those foods essentially meant to improve your health because of its high nutrient content? Whether its spread on toast or being dipped by chips, this delicious food is filled with nutrients applicable to any meal during the day. I mean, let's be real, how can anyone not like avocado? Although this takes the crown as the current most popular superfood, these are a few others you should start to include in your diet.

1. Avocado

If I open up by stating how great this fruit is, I should at least explain why, right? For starters, they are high in fiber, potassium, vitamin E and magnesium. Its high percentage of monounsaturated oil has been proven to help lower cholesterol. Additionally, they have the ability to help facilitate weight loss and lower the chance of prostate cancer. With one of the highest ounce per nutrient ratio, it is no wonder avocados are one of the most popular superfoods.

2. Oranges

Also high in fiber, more importantly, oranges are high in Vitamin C. Not only do they help produce white blood cells and antibodies to build up your immune system, but they also keep you skin healthy.

3. Sweet Potatoes

That's right. I said potatoes. No, I am not justifying the large side of fries you just ordered with your meal, but I am informing you that you can enjoy potatoes without feeling guilty for doing so. Known as one of the most nutritious vegetables, these are packed with plenty of Vitamin A, C, and B6. The combination helps keep your eyes, bones, and immune system healthy.

4. Tea

A cup of tea a day can help lower your risk of diabetes, cancer, Alzheimer’s, build stronger bones, and keep your teeth and gums healthy. This rich antioxidant filled drink, also containing caffeine, may be the perfect swap for your morning cup of coffee.

5. Spinach

Packed with Vitamins A, C, E, and K, in addition to fiber, iron, calcium, potassium, and magnesium, this vegetable helps your body to continue to make new healthy cells.

6. Eggs

While the rumor often is don't eat eggs if you're trying to keep your cholesterol down, I say just eat some with avocado for breakfast and the worry is removed. High in protein and filled with antioxidants, this superfood helps keeps your eyes healthy, may protect your skin against UV damage, and is the perfect breakfast food to keep you full and provide you with the energy needed for your day.

7. Berries

As you may have noticed by now, many of these superfoods are high in fiber, and berries are no different. Fiber is important for a healthy digestive system with the possibility of assisting in weight loss. Filled with antioxidants and vitamins to keep your skin healthy, memory sharp, and may have cancer fighting properties, these are an easy snack to incorporate into your day.

8. Beans

An excellent source of iron, this vegetable is also high in fiber and perfect to pair with other superfoods from this list. By combining beans and sweet potatoes, your body will absorb a higher percentage of the iron and the fiber will help keep your blood and cholesterol levels low.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
