We all watch and guilty binge so many TV shows; but do you ever take a minute to think they have taught you something? As an avid Netflix user, I've watched it all. I, more recently than ever, find myself looking back on some of the episodes for guidance. Okay, yes, I know none of it is real and sometimes seems overdramatic, but the truth is that chances are you are going to go through at least one similar predicament. And, no, I am not saying that you should take life tips from Kim Kardashian, but I do believe that there are many amazing female role models written into many of the shows we watch for hours. Before reading, be aware that there are spoilers of plot points in the following TV shows: Gilmore Girls, One Tree Hill, Glee, Scandal, Gossip Girl, Revenge, and Full House.
1. Lorelai Gilmore 'Gilmore Girls'
If anyone can bounce back with success and sarcasm after becoming pregnant at sixteen, it's Lorelai. She not only raised a child at such a young age, but also did it mostly on her own. Despite having wealthy parents, she always avoided going to them for help and never relied on them. Once a failure in the eyes of her parents, she eventually ran her own business and her daughter graduated from Yale. Lorelai is the perfect example of a strong, independent female that can do it all.
2. Brooke Davis 'One Tree Hill'
Brooke leads a perfect, uplifting life as the captain of the cheer team with not the best reputation. At the beginning of the show, you do not think of her as much of a complex character. She seems to cause drama and try to get with every guy, but the truth is that what you learn about her throughout eight seasons is so much greater. She becomes a successful clothes designer despite everyone's presumptions that she would not make it past high school. Brooke exemplifies for young women that you don't need a man in your life, hence her company name 'Clothes Before Bros.'
3. Quinn Fabray 'Glee'
Quinn is another character who experienced a teen pregnancy, minus the actual raising of the child. We again see a superficial cheerleader on the surface, but as you follow her story, you realize that Quinn is a example of honesty. She faces many challenges and difficult decisions, as she made the courageous choice to give her baby up for adoption. She may not come right out an admit the truth or make the right decision immediately, but it always comes out eventually. She is also a very loyal character, as she supports everyone in the Glee club despite how different they are from her. She teaches young women honesty and acceptance.
4. Olivia Pope 'Scandal'
Olivia Pope is not only a huge lead role for women, but women of color. To begin, she occupies a major role in Washington and politics, which tends to be populated by men. She knows how to get the job done despite the temptations of lust and love that get in the way. She stands for the idea that a person's identity as a women or a minority should not get in the way of success and goals.
5. Santana 'Glee'
Being openly gay and singing high notes does not come hard to Santana Lopez. We watch as she goes through many phases, guys and girls to learn that Santana does not care what others think. She lives her life like her own. Despite the sass and, some would say, boundary crossing as well as brutal honesty, she knows how to be genuine with those around her. Many look to her in the hopes that they will live life confident and happy with who they are.
6. Blair Waldorf 'Gossip Girl'
Upper East Side money may seem nice on the surface, but through Blair we can see that it may even make life worse. She shows that money is not everything. The only time she is truly happy is when she has the love of Chuck and her friends. Ultimately, her life proves that money can't buy happiness.
7. Emily Thorn 'Revenge'
Revenge can be a dirty game that only ends is death or damage, but, in my opinion, Emily Thorn or Amanda Clark does it right. She takes "family first" to a whole other level as she will go to no end to clear her father's name and take down the family that ruined her life. What's a couple engagements and a secret identity anyway? I'm not saying go hunt down everyone that has done you wrong, but never quit and always stand by those you love the most.
8. Becky Katsopolis 'Full House'
Motherhood is a hard task, one that some are not ready for. Now, imagine you are the mother-figure of an entire household. Becky took on the motherly role before even having children of her own. I grew up watching 'Full House' as a child and can still, to this day, hear Becky giving advice. She may have been known as "Aunt Becky," but the truth is she was the first mother figure I saw on television. You know what they say, "better call Becky with the good hair."
