What do you do when you first wake up? Check Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, or Pinterest? I'm sure the majority of us are guilty of starting our mornings with at least one of those, but is there ever an off switch? Is there a time when you wake up and live life without these "necessities"?
Here are 8 steps to stop social media from controlling your life.
1. Make a routine.
This routine is for the purpose of becoming habitual. Because we all have had those mornings where we are stuck in bed on our phones scrolling through what seems like endless feed. When you're productive and make a good use out of your time, you feel much more accomplished and that makes a great start to your morning.
2. Turn off notifications
I'm not recommending anyone to necessarily uninstall social media apps, unless you feel like you should. Just find your balance, turning off notifications is definitely a helpful alternative.
3. Personal contact
Get back into the habit of texting and calling people. Social media isn't the only option as far as virtual communication goes. Face to face communication is also a great way to make connections, outside of technology -haha.
4. Find alternative activities that you're interested in.
We all have that one thing that we want to do, but "don't have time for", or "don't make time for." This is your chance to begin doing these things and really value your time.
5. Set time limits
We all know time can move lighting fast when you're scrolling through feed. How about setting an alarm for 30 minutes or an hour for social media time - it isn't such a bad idea.
6. Stop the drama and just unfollow
Drama isn't everything, it takes up time and it serves absolutely no purpose. It's so easy to get caught up in these things, but just as easy to stay away from them. Unfollow/unfriend people who cause your stress and worry, it's not worth it.
7. Try to follow people who add some value to your day
Instead of scrolling through negative feed, wouldn't it be nice to see something positive and relative to your life for a change?
8. Believe that you can control it, and not allow it to control you.
Social media can be powerful, but you ultimately have the choice and hold that power in your finger tips - literally. So make the choice, and choose balance.
Nobody should be a slave to their phone.
