11 Songs You Need To Check Out This Summer
Shannon Pennell

Summer is fast approaching and with the summer comes time to finally lay out in the sun and relax. However, what's relaxing without a little music to supply? Below I have compiled (what I like to believe) eleven songs that must be added to any summer playlist or even a playlist all on their own!

1. "Cabo" by Ricky Montgomery on "Montgomery Ricky"

Some may know Ricky Montgomery from his popular channel on the social media platform Vine. Ricky Montgomery has made his name in the music industry by releasing his first, full-length album "Montgomery Ricky." The third song on the album, titled "Cabo," has an upbeat tempo and catchy lyrics, making this song an easy add to any summer playlist.

2. "Slow Dance Night" by This Century on "Biography of Heartbreak"

Although This Century may have disbanded since this song came out, that doesn't mean we can't appreciate the band's music! The guitar riff and simple bass beat throughout the entire song give this song its "beachy vibes." And who knows, maybe you could have a "slow dance night!"

3. "18" by Anarbor on "Burnout"

Another band that has met its end, this song is the essential song for any angsty, newly aged 18-year-old looking for a little fun. The summer is all about trying new things and this song could be your new anthem.

4. "Run Dry" by Patrick Stump on "Soul Punk"

While the Fall Out Boy hiatus left many of us sad and heartbroken, it did leave us with a few good memories; including this song! Written and recorded while the Chicago pop punk band were on break, lead singer Patrick Stump came out with his own album that left our ears with this hidden gem that is perfect for the summer!

5. "I Know What You Did Last Summer" by Shawn Mendes ft. Camila Cabello on "Handwritten"

This song is essentially a given. I mean, it has the word "summer" right in it! The harmonies that Shawn Mendes and Camilla Cabello of Fifth Harmony create together are overwhelmingly fantastic. With this summer tune, who knows what kind of trouble you might get into?

6. "Lightening In A Bottle" by The Summer Set on "Legendary"

Again, the band name gives the reasoning away. If you've been searching for a new band with an upbeat sound that always keeps the good times coming, then stop your searching! This song is all about having a good time with your friends, letting go of your worries and capturing your most precious memories with those you care about the most.

7. "We Don't Talk Anymore" by Charlie Puth ft. Selena Gomez on "Nine Track Mind"

You know that one guy that did that one really sad song with Wiz Khalifa? Well, Mr. Charlie Puth is back with his first, full-length album titled "Nine Track Mind." This "track" stands out because not only do we get to hear Charlie show off his incredible vocal range, but the beautiful Selena Gomez makes a little guest feature!

8. "She's American" by The 1975 on "I like it when you sleep, for you are so beautiful yet so unaware of it"

Preceding a small break and an incredibly successful first album, The 1975 are back and better than ever. To fit their new pink aesthetic, for those of you who are familiar with the gloomy black and white, the British rock band has released this high energy, soon-to-be summer classic for your ears' enjoyment.

9.) "Blame It On The Stars" by Andy Grammer on "Magazines or Novels"

A recent alum of the UMass Boston Spring Concert Series, Andy Grammer's newest album "Magazines or Novels" is filled with new jams and tunes to get you motivated for any kind of mood. "Blame It On The Stars" deals with love and astrology signs, a big topic right now that almost anyone can relate to!

10.) "English Girls" by The Maine on "American Candy"

Released as their first single off their latest album "American Candy". Although The Maine is a staple summer band with their high energy choruses and catchy guitar solos, this song stands out to me as a summer essential.

11.) "Change Your Ticket" by One Direction on "Four"

While this may be a lesser known track by the world's biggest boy band, that doesn't dismiss how great it is! This song will get you out of bed on even your laziest days and help pave the way to your perfect summer day.

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

If it hurts now, it'll hurt again. Not because you're gullible or naive, only because you fall fast, hard, and you do it every time.

We fall each and every time with the complete and utter confidence that someone will be there to catch us. Now that person we SWORE we were never going to fall for has our hearts, and every time we see them our palms start sweating. The butterflies in our stomach start to soar and our hearts are entirely too close to bursting out of our chests.

10 Things Only Equestrians Understand

Yes, it IS a sport. Yes, I fall all the time. No, I do not ride in jeans with a cowgirl hat on.

Growing up I have always wanted to own a horse. My grandparents own a well known equestrian facility in Georgia, so I have been riding since I was born. A bond between a person and their horse is a bond so strong that it cannot be broken. Everywhere I went I wanted to be around horses, even forcing my family to go on trail rides during vacations. Horses have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember has taught me great responsibility, as well as 14 things that all equestrians can relate to.

College is super hard. Between working, studying, and having a social life, it feels like a struggle to just keep afloat.

I understand. When you feel like your drowning and there's no way to stay afloat I understand that it feels like everyone else is doing just fine. I understand all the frustration, long nights in the library, and that feeling that you want to just throw in the towel. I understand that sometimes it's too hard to get out of bed because your brain is already filled with too much information to remember. I understand because I am also feeling pretty burnt out.

No Matter How Challenging School Gets, You Have To Put Your Health First — A Degree Won't Mean Anything If You're Dead

Some of the best advice I've ever received was from my social studies teacher in sophomore year of high school. He stated, "If you don't know it at midnight, you're not going to know it for the 8 a.m. exam, so get some sleep."

It's such a simple piece of advice, but it holds so much accuracy and it's something that the majority of college students need to hear and listen to. "All-nighters" are a commonality on college campuses in order to cram in studying for an exam that is typically the next day.
