8 Signs You Are Graduating

The end is near.

8 Signs You Are Graduating
Kristin Wong

It is the final semester of your college career and you can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel. You have been working toward one expensive piece of paper for four years now. Sometimes it is too easy to get caught up with everything going around you -- classes, work, busy schedules -- and you forget that you are counting down days! As someone who has invested so much time in one place, it becomes like a second home; with graduation comes many different emotions. You have expectations of your family and friends, you need to be able to find a job, along with many other scary responsibilities. Here are some signs that you are graduating.

1. People start asking you,"What do you plan to do once you graduate?"

This question easily turns satirical, because who actually knows what they are doing? You know it would be nice to have everything figured out, but that's just not going to happen.

2. Your end of the program survey pops up.

You have been waiting for this survey for three years now, and it is finally time to tell them everything you think. You probably could not type fast enough about that one annoying professor, or about the lack of parking and sidewalks.

3. Your parents talk about their plans when they cut you off.

One moment you are living a blissful life...until it happens and you have days until you are on your own. Coming from someone who was blessed with giving parents, it would be the same as making an addict quit cold turkey.

4. You have to start to calculate how much you will pay in bills.

You started to do the math of what it costs to live. It is not looking good in your bank account, so now you begin to save for your future transgressions.

5. You get excited thinking about leaving.

You could not be more ready to be done with school. No more homework, textbooks, classes, and finally, freedom is near.

6. You get sad thinking about leaving.

You realize you are leaving a place you call home. You know you are going to miss this place more than you will ever admit.

7. You are searching for any job hiring right now.

Anywhere handing out green paper is your best friend. At this point, you will take any kind of job as long as you get the green goods.

8. You are going through your "last" of everything

The last first day of class, last time to learn names, last winter break, and it just never ends until the day you leave. The whole semester you are experiencing last opportunities and chances to do something.

In the end, you are praising God that you actually made it through an entire four years without failing. There were some rough days and definitely some good days, but looking back you will never forget all the memories you made over the years, and how much you have grown. You may not feel ready to be a part of the real world, but the real world is ready for you.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
