8 Signs That You're Adulting

I think the signs are telling you something

Sometimes you are going about your normal day when it hits you--you’re kind of an adult. Although you aren't married with kids and you might lean on your parents as a financial crutch every now and then, you know you are an adult when:

1. You talk to your friends about what grocery store has what on sale this week

Lunch talk that used to consist of irrelevant gossip has quickly transitioned to grocery store steals. Sometimes you even bring in a little coupon action. Life is different when you start paying for your own groceries.

2. You watch the debates because you want to

The debate is something that matters to you, especially because you get to vote. You are beginning to have personal affiliations with different people and different opinions on certain issues and topics.

3. You learn how to manage your time

Those agendas that you used to doodle in middle school are now your saving grace. Losing your agenda would probably be the single most tragedy you could imagine. You plan things, you manage things, and occasionally, you even get ahead of schedule.

4. You pay bills

As you get older, you begin to realize the system of life: you have to pay for pretty much everything. From apartment bills to electric bills to parking tickets, the list goes on and on.

5. You become friends with your parents

Suddenly your parents become your best friends. They no longer tell you what to do, but you find yourself wanting their advice all on your own.

6. You reminisce on the “good old days” a lot

Suddenly high school becomes the good old days. Suddenly all of the crazy, stupid things you used to do are in the past and all of those things that seems like the end of the world are already things that you look back and laugh on.

7. You nap, a lot

Napping becomes a daily thing. You actually feel psychologically and physically dependent on them. When life gives you 15 minutes without obligation, you take full advantage.

8. You stop and look around a little more

Suddenly the trees changing color have become the most fascinating thing to look at. Suddenly you start looking at people’s hearts instead of their faces. Suddenly you begin to look at things that mean something to you.

Adulthood is full of a lot of things, but right now, I think promise is the best word to describe it. Life is full of promise and change and endless possibilities. Cheers to adulthood.

Parks and Recreation excitedly gathered around a laptop at a table in an office setting.

The library. Club lib. The place every college student goes when they want to try and be a productive member of society. Who better to explain your experience than Parks and Rec?

1. When you've finally found the energy to leave your dorm room and walk into the lib like

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
