For high-schoolers, summer can't come fast enough or last long enough. For college kids, you probably feel the opposite. I cried when I packed up my dorm room, cried when my parents loaded it into the car, and cried even more as we drove away from the place that has become my home. I love my hometown too, and my high school friends, but living at home again can be a huge struggle once you've gotten used to living with no supervision. So, I'm going to put into words some of the feelings that all college kids have when you come home for the summer, a.k.a. reasons you want to return to school.
1. Your friends don't live down the hall.
Wait, I can't walk to see you anymore? You live two hours away? What kind of sick joke is this?
2. You only have one closet to pick from.
Your'e used to running back and forth between rooms, trying on clothes and then throwing them onto the ground in search of the perfect outfit. Now, you just stare dejectedly at your closet and wonder how you ever survived on so little clothing.
3. Your parents ask you where you are... All the time.
Dude I don't know what you thought I did in college, but no one ever questioned me there. So please don't interrogate me when I'm trying to just go to Cookout.
4. You have to work.
If you're anything like me, you work all summer to save up money so that you won't have to work during the school year. 40 hours a week wearing business casual... We'll see if I last the summer.
5. There's nowhere to go out at home.
College towns, including my own, are notorious for having bars that are easy to get into and tons of fun. Your hometown, on the other hand, has a couple of bars that are strict on IDs and full of people close to 30.
6. You miss campus.
Don't get me wrong, I love seeing the skyline of Charlotte everyday. But nothing can compare walking through campus, admiring the beauty, and feeling overwhelmingly at home.
7. You have to live in your childhood bedroom.
My room hasn't been re-done since I was 3, if that gives you a good point of reference as to why I don't want to live there.
8. It doesn't feel like it used to.
It's still your home, but it feels different because your heart now belongs halfway to somewhere else. And as hard as you try, you can't stop missing it until you're back.
