8 Reasons Why You Should Not Study Abroad

It may not be all it's cracked up to be.

8 Reasons Why You Should Not Study Abroad
Taylor Oren

I had the incredible privilege to study in Florence, Italy. I spent five months traveling Europe, eating gelato, living in an apartment with frescoed ceilings and butchering the Italian language. Many college students who study abroad claim it was the best experience of their lives. However, studying abroad is not for everyone.

Studying abroad isn’t for you if…

1. You have an extreme case of FOMO.

You will be making new memories, and so will your friends back at home. Without you. Whether it's weekend trips, the group chat you’ll be removed from or school events, the truth is you will miss it all. Fear of missing out will ruin study abroad for you.

2. You are scared of new experiences.

No matter how many hours you spend preparing, there will come a point where everything goes completely wrong. If you have a hard time adapting, you will have a hard time every single day abroad.

3.You hate being alone.

As a study abroad student, you will spend many hours by yourself. Friends will want to go see different attractions than you, and you'll spend solo time exploring. Being comfortable wandering around lost, by yourself, is a necessary quality.

4. You are dependent on someone at home.

Whether you left a significant other at home, a loyal group of homies or you just need your mom, study abroad makes keeping in touch extremely hard. Unless you buy data, you will be dependent on some obscure cafe's WiFi to talk to loved ones. Your relationships will also suffer the hit of the time difference.

5. You have a need to win people over.

The second you open your mouth and speak English to your friend in line, most people will not like you. You must be comfortable with the fact that many people around the world do not like Americans, and usually it’s for a good reason.

6. You like the way you are.

It is impossible to travel and remain the same. Your experience abroad will change you for better or for worse, often both at the same time. You will come back with entirely new traits to surprise your friends and family with.

7. You spook easy.

I guarantee you that a someone will scare you while you are out there. It may be a man following you at night, a woman trying to steal your bag on the train or people shoving selfie-sticks in your face. Someone will recognize you as a tourist and try to capitalize on it.

8. All your friends at home are just like you.

Study abroad will introduce you to college students from all over the U.S. I met kids from Kansas, New Jersey, Washington, Maine, Texas, etc. No one will be just like you. You will make no friends if you wait around for someone with similar interests.

Studying abroad changed my life immensely, but consider these eight things before you buy a backpack and a plane ticket!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
