Sometimes, it seems as though the Midwest doesn't get enough credit. Sure, the Eastcoast is cool, but what about everywhere else? In fact, what about Michigan? Here's a few reasons why Michiagan is totally underrated.
1. “Michiganders” have a map of the state attached right to their arm
If you’re from Michigan, chances are you’ve shown someone where you live using your right hand. This person probably reciprocated your gesture with a questioning glance.
2. There’s an island where no cars are allowed.
On Mackinac Island, you don’t have to worry about being hit by a car while crossing the street. Instead, it’s the ever-present herd of bicyclists you have to worry about. Nevertheless, it’s nice to not have to listen to engines and motors, that is unless the ferry close by.
3. No salt, no sharks.
Michigan is surrounded by five of the greatest lakes, all of which harbor fresh water and very few threatening deep-sea creatures.
4. Tim Allen’s soothing voice makes an appearance at least 6 times per day.
Whether or not you’re watching the Wolverines vs. the Spartans or listening to Star 105.7, Tim Allen and a Pure Michigan commercial are bound to grace your presence.
5. Nearly everyone has a lake house “Up North”.
“Up North” is a term used for pretty much any city north of Muskegon and is the grand not-so-hidden gem of the state.
6. It’s a state of many talents.
Madonna, Eminem, Stevie Wonder, Taylor Lautner, Big Sean, Kid Rock, Serena Williams, and Floyd Mayweather, among many others, were born and most likely only half-way raised in the mitten state.
7. There’s a whole city dedicated to Christmas.
In Frankenmuth, Michigan, a.k.a. Christmas City USA, there’s nothing better than a little Christmas all year round. Fun fact: Frankenmuth is also considered Michigan's little Bavaria!
8. 75% of the United States’ tart cherries are from Michigan.
In the summertime, streets are lined with fully-stocked cherry trees and these cherry trees are covered with millions of pieces of fresh fruit.
