8 Reasons You Should Watch Doctor Who

There are many shows to flip past on your television or on Netflix, but Doctor Who should not be one of those series overlooked. There is one alien whose appearance resembles that of a human, has not only one heart but two, and he is called the Doctor. He protects many worlds within the universe, like Earth, and species in different galaxies from creatures and monsters, sometimes even humans, that may harm the life that lives there. He travels all throughout time and space, sometimes alone, but most of the time, the Doctor has extraordinary companions along for the ride. If you needed further convincing to watch this amazingly brilliant series, here are eight reasons to do so.

8. The Doctor travels in a Tardis.

The Doctor's one mode of transportation is the Tardis, which is a blue police box that is "smaller on the outside but bigger on the inside." It is a time machine that may make a few spontaneous side trips, but this Tardis allows him to travel and save worlds from imminent peril.

7. The plot twists will blow your mind.

There is no other show like Doctor Who that can make you believe one truth with absolute certainty and conviction -- until it suddenly shoves you into the hole of another major plot that as a mere human, you never would have considered.

6. The monsters complement the series perfectly.

The series has created its own truly original creatures that vary from being cute, incredibly smart, and also quite haunting. Who knew that common objects like stone angel statues (Weeping Angels) could be turned into such terrifying monsters and seem very much alive? Weeping angels are enemies that turn to stone only when you are looking at them: blink once, and you're dead. The series has even more of these unreal monsters such as Cybermen, Daleks, and the Silence, all of which also add an intense amount of eerie and fear to the series.

5. Historical figures make an appearance, which makes it even more interesting.

You will learn about history while watching Doctor Who -- with a slight twist. Sometimes, these story arcs are so well written to alter the timeline of history, that it may become difficult to discern what the Doctor had to do with this "fictional" account of history versus what we know to be true. To give you an idea of the Doctor's range, some of the historical individuals that make cameos in this series include Winston Churchill, Hitler, Vincent Van Gogh, and Robin Hood. (You also get to go into the future, and meet the very last human as well.)

4. The Doctor regenerates.

His face (and consequently, the actor) frequently changes and while one aspect of his personality may be heightened or disappear with a new "body", this allows a charming variety of the Doctor and his heroisms. His face may be different, but he will always be an alien that time travels while trying to save various species, old and new, while being a quirky, stone-cold serious, and at times, heart-wrenchingly sad character that you will grow to love.

3. The script writing is genius.

Doctor Who has a plethora of stories that are all complied into one that makes this series genuinely incredible. Each character and place has such intricate details that make each scene feel realistic and life-like. The writers of this series continue to make viewers experience every single emotion that one should feel.

2. You will love the companions.

As aforementioned, the Doctor does not often travel alone. Each companion that travels with the Doctor has his or her own story that you might be able to relate to, and when the companion finally departs their chapter with the Doctor, it will break your heart over and over. I promise. All of these companions have the pleasure of traveling with the Doctor visiting planets as well as saving them, but the Doctor (and the viewer) also has the honor of getting to know every single one of them.

1. It is an adventure through time and space.

Who would decline an invitation to travel all through time and space in a blue police box with a stranger who calls himself the Doctor? Okay, yeah, he is a stranger, but you will get to see different galaxies, worlds, and creatures. Pick anywhere in the world, any time and any place, and the Doctor will take you there.

Doctor Who will not only open your eyes but your mind as well. Watch the series as the Doctor (Peter Capldi) and current companion, Clara Oswald (Jenna Coleman), experience a series of obstacles to save numerous galaxies and lives. Series nine premiered recently, so get caught up now before Clara Oswald makes her heart-breaking departure this season.
