I was born and raised in Waterloo, Iowa. With a population of a little over 68,000, it's one of the most populated cities in Iowa. Growing up in this city has its advantages and disadvantages. Unfortunately, when people think of Waterloo, they think of a crime ridden town that's filled with criminals. While it is true that Waterloo sees its fair share of crime, it's still a wonderful place to live, and here's 8 reasons why.
1. Diversity
Waterloo is one of the most diverse cities in the state of Iowa. There's a large population of White, African-American, Hispanic, Bosnian, and Burmese who reside here which helps make the town an extremely diverse and welcoming community. There's also a large amount of different religious groups as well. There are places of worship for Catholic, Methodist, Baptist, Jehovah Witness, Jewish, Muslim, and other faiths.
2. Waterloo Black Hawks Hockey
If you've ever lived in Waterloo, you know the phrase, "It's hockey time in Party Town!" The Waterloo Black Hawks are a United States Hockey League team that plays at Young Arena in downtown Waterloo. Led by head coach P.K. O'Handley, they've won the Clark Cup and have made it to the playoffs numerous times. Their games are a source of entertainment and fun for many.3. Waterloo Bucks
During the summer when the Black Hawks aren't playing, you can catch a baseball game down at the newly redesigned Riverfront Stadium. The Waterloo Bucks baseball team is a part of the Northwoods League and has been a part of Waterloo since 1995.4. Friday'Loo
A unique and exciting experience, Friday'Loo is hosted by Main Street Waterloo and is held at Lincoln Park in downtown Waterloo on certain Friday nights. Typically beginning towards the end of May, local bands perform for the crowd while food and beer vendors sell their goods. Admission is free and it allows the community to come together and have a good time.
5. 4th Street Cruise
This is a tradition that has delighted crowds for decades. People of all ages line the streets to watch classic car enthusiasts drive their extravagant and classic cars down 4th Street.
6. Waterloo Center for the Arts and Phelps Youth Pavilion
A great source of art and fun, the Waterloo Center for the Arts and Youth Pavilion allows those of all ages to explore their artistic side. It's also a hot spot for weddings, open houses, and birthday parties.7. Grout Museum District
Waterloo is blessed to have its very own historical organization. The Grout Museum District includes the Sullivan Brothers Iowa Veterans Museum, Grout Museum of History and Science, Bluedorn Science Imaginarium, Russell House Museum, and the Snwden House. All of these places offer visitors a chance to learn about the rich history of Waterloo and have fun while doing it!
8. A small, but mighty community
Waterloo is a city that's not too big, but not too small. There's rural areas and farmland, but there's also city lights and businesses. You're bound to see someone you know when you go to the grocery store, but can also be surrounded by strangers in your 8 AM workout class. It's a nice balance that benefits all types of people.
